A revision of the family Macrothelidae has created some new genera and name changes for some of the hobby spiders that we are familiar with.

Macrothele calpeiana stays the same. This species described in 1805 is the type species for the genus Macrothele.

Macrothele hungae (ex hobby M. gigas) is now Gigathele hungae. This is a bit confusing as most people will know this spider as Macrothele gigas in the hobby. However what has been sold as M. gigas for decades in the hobby was always really just misidentified Macrothele hungae from Taiwan. The real M. gigas is only known from a small population on Japan’s Ryukyu island. Gigathele hungae is the large, mean, black spider with the red fangs that most people desire and seek out in the hobby.

Macrothele holsti is now Spinathele holsti. This small species from Taiwan that was described in 1901 now has a new genus name.

Macrothele taiwanensis is now Vacrothele taiwanensis. This small species from Taiwan that was described in 1998 now has a new genus name.

Macrothele monocirculata is now Gigathele monocirculata.
This medium sized species from China that was described in 2000 now has a new genus.

Macrothele yaginumai is now Vacrothele yaginumai. This small species from Japan that was described in 1998 now has a new genus name.

There may be some other changes for some of the other lesser known species that sometimes pop up that will require a bit more looking into. These are the most commonly kept species though.

I took this photo back in 2013 when I had a mature male Neoholothele escape from its enclosure. 2 weeks later I found it behind my TV tied up in a Parasteatoda web. That little house spider managed to get the tarantula suspended off the ground by 2 inches when I found it, and was starting to feed on the abdomen.

Rare arboreal trapdoor spider in the Barychelidae family. These dwarf spiders build a trapdoor retreat on the side of bark similar to Typhochlaena species, but with opposing duel style trapdoors. They tend to be found on coconut trees close to the coast, but will easily adapted to cork bark in captivity. I’ve even had them build the trapdoors right on the sides of the plastic shipping containers. Adults reach one inch and are interesting and easy to keep. Described in 2003 by Austrian arachnologist Peter J. Schwendingerl. These spiders are native to Thailand and Malaysia.

We are tuned in to the British Tarantula Society lectures today. Hopefully I can attend in person one day again, but thankful for the live stream while I sit here feeding my spiders. So far the lectures have been great. Thanks to the BTS for continuing to put this together for all these years.
