Pioneers for Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), Inc., is a 501(c)(3) not for profit, 100% volunteer NYS corporation which has been operating on Long Island for over 40 years. We are working to create a better welfare system for all the animals in our communities. Over the years, we created, and continue to create, a number of valuable programs which serve to promote our mission to create respect for a

ll animals, to educate individuals about animals, to help people keep their animals, and to provide assistance with the control of the animal population on Long Island. PAWS has many programs which are helpful in achieving our goals. Some of our programs include:

UPDATE: 6/11/24-Sassy's growth was removed and tested positive for cancer - she is healing well and feels much better without the bladder stones and constant leaking. We are still struggling to pay her vet bill! Any amount is helpful. She is on a special food these urinary/bladder issues

URGENT Foster/Home Needed – Long Island, NY

Meet Charlie! This 15mo old red nose male Pittie, weighing about 60lbs, needs a new home. He was rescued as a pup about a year ago but he’s not getting along well with the other dog in the family. We do not know if it is Charlie or the resident dog. Charlie is good with people and kids; he lives with a two-year-old now. Charlie is very energetic and would love a nice yard to play in. He likes going for walks on the leash and enjoys car rides. He loves cuddles and attention, and he really loves his treats!! Charlie is fully trained, including crate, neutered and up to date on all vaccinations.

He understands basic commands like sit, paw and lay down. The family has been working with Pioneers for Animal Welfare Society Inc in attempts to find Charlie a new home for a few months, but no one has stepped up. His situation is sadly urgent; he needs to move out.

Foster/Home Needed – Long Island, NY

Meet Phoebe. This sweet female feline is a 10 ½ yr old lap cat! She LOVES people, being pet, being brushed, playing with her toys….any kind of attention really…..as long as it’s from humans. A happy ending for these two beautiful handicapped dogs! Trey a beautiful, young heeler mix tripod and his best friend Sugar, who is in a wheelchair as she was hit by a car are en route to their foster/adoption homes in CT. Their new guardians are friends and live close by so Trey and Sugar will still see each other all the time. Our rescue colleague "Just a Girl Saving a Dog" in Texas saved these two off the streets of Texas. We found a home for them up here.

Pluto, Also Known As Cosmos!
Home Needed – Connecticut or Long Island, NY

Meet Pluto, also known as Cosmos! This handsome 2yr old boy was saved from ACC a few days before Christmas and is in need of a place to call home. He loves to run and play with other dogs and enjoys a good game of fetch. He loves to snuggle, give kisses and just be with his person. He has the cutest, most peaceful little snore 😊 He needs a little structure in his life and he's eager to learn. He
appears interested in cats. Kids 13yrs+ would be best. He weighs roughly 55lbs, is neutered
and up to date on all shots; just a healthy, happy boy who needs a home of his own, ideally with a dog friend to help him feel secure and who he can wrestle and play with. He needs proper exercise and will surely make a great friend.

ACE
Foster Needed – Rochester, NY area ONLY

This big goofball is Ace! He is a sweet boy in need of a foster/foster to forever home. Ace has moved FIVE TIMES already…. THROUGH
NO FAULT OF HIS OWN! His first placement was to a shelter as a pup. Then he was adopted by a family, but they had to move so he ended up back in a shelter. His 4th move was when he was adopted by his last family but now they cannot find affordable housing
that will accept him, so he was surrendered again. He is safe in boarding/training, but he is still in need of a foster/foster to forever home. Ace is a 6-year-old 40 lb mix/red nose Pitbull. He is housebroken, crate trained, good in the car, and he loves to run and play! He is dog selective and prefers to be the only pet in the home. Children over the age of 13yrs recommended. He is neutered, microchipped and UTD on all vaccines and preventatives.

Meet Roxy. She is a mixed breed senior gal of 14yrs, weighing about 50lbs. She loves just about everything and everyone. Roxy has a calm demeanor, is very congenial and affectionate. Athena Foster/Home Needed – Long Island, NY Meet Athena. This sweet girl was rescued from down south with her BFF and brought to us in search of the life they deserve but have never had ☹ Athena’s buddy Titan has been adopted, which is wonderful, but now it’s Athena’s turn. She is waiting patiently for her person/people. Athena is now a 3yr old female Terrier mix, weighing roughly 45lbs. Poor girl was half starved when we first saw her. Thankfully she is doing much better now. Athena is sweet, very playful and a little rambunctious. Amazing what a good meal or two can do for a girl, huh? She is ok with other dogs her size, but no small animals. Due to her size and lack of experience, children under the age of 13yrs are not recommended. Athena is spayed and UTD on all. *Not one inquiry- if these two get in shelter, they will be separated due to over crowding and no room. This will be really stressful for them and could result in them not lasting long there. Someone please step up!* Bonded pair 🙏🏻. Senior girl and her best friend in Urgent need, shelter bound if lucky; fate unknown . Located Long Island- will consider NY, Ct and NJ URGENT SASSY AND PRIMO are shelter bound Monday, Jan 29, if room at Town Shelter- If no room, their fate is unknown. They are currently on Long Island. Their dad must leave his rental home due to divorce- his wife left and wants nothing to do with Primo and Sassy. He will move in with family right now but no one will or can take his furry children. WE see this ALL Of the Time- sometimes family members can help their human member but usually the furry companion has now hep. In todays environment, housing is scarce, especially for humans and their animals. WE are not a facility-we are purely foster based and we have so many in need. Won’t someone step up to give these two a safe haven? Shelters are full- and if no room, there is literally no place for these dogs to go. If they are “lucky enough” to find “safe haven” at the town shelter, they will be split and fate will be unknown. Primo, pittie mush, 90 lbs is a neutered boy and is 6; Sassy, bulldog/pug mix, 35 lbs is a spayed girl who is 10 yrs old and they are best friends. They love to play, go for walks. Foster/Foster to Adopt Home Needed – Long Island, NY Meet SUGAR! If ever a dog has earned its name, this girl certainly has! Sugar is a 4y/o female mix breed, weighing about 30lbs. She was found by a good Samaritan living on the streets! She was dragging her rear legs, so they assumed she was partially paralyzed. They brought her to a vet where we learned these were not recent injuries. ☹ The vet provided medical treatment that has had some successful results! Sugar can put a bit of weight on her hind legs and has some limited mobility! Our hope is she will continue to improve, but meanwhile she gets around great in her wheelchair from Joey's PAW and is a sweet, happy girl! Sugar gets along GREAT with other dogs & cats! She is spayed & up to date on all vaccines & preventatives. Update on this beauty ! We pulled Molly from an upstate shelter after we were advised of her situation ...she had been there for months. We found the most incredible home for her here on li...she is soooo happy❤️

BUNNY 🐇 🐰 in search of a forever home! MEET NOAH! Noah is a male 18 month old black/grey Lionhead bun. He was surrendered by a former breeder who kept them in a retail storefront. That breeder rescued him from a pet store, where Noah was terrified of so many strangers handling him roughly. He's very affectionate, and loves to cuddle on the couch and watch TV! He's also litter-box trained, AND doesn't chew when he is left to free roam! He loves to be petted & brushed! He's now fully vetted, microchipped & neutered. Bunnies aren't to be kept in cages-they can be litterbox trained and free roam in a bunny proofed room or home, or kept in an Xpen. Bunnies aren't ideal pets for small children as they require delicate handling. But the good news? Bunnies can't be bathed, don't need groomers and don't require annual vaccines! They're very clean animals who are a LOT of fun-like a kitten that never grows up! Ideal foster to adopt parent will have prior bun experience. Senior boy loses senior parent 💔, now in need of a THIRD & final 🏡 home! Please like, follow & share to prove to Beau the 3rd time's the charm! MEET BEAU! Foster/Foster to Adopt Home Needed – Long Island, NY OR Lehigh Valley, PABeau's a sweet 9 y/o Boxer mix who's had a rough start. He was found in the street, hit by a car. A local shelter took him in and treated him. He was caged alone for 2 years as he doesn't do well with other dogs, but he's a 100 lb. gentle giant with people! In 2020 a local elderly man heard Beau’s story, met him & fell in love. They took many long walks daily & played fetch for hours. Sadly, his dad passed away. Family took him in, but it's not working, as he must be the only pet in the home. They're heartbroken because Beau is very loyal & sweet. He’s also smart!
