Youth Team Leader Noah McCall helps parents and Youth Employees share their work availability as school begins. Growing High Point's Youth Program currently runs through October, and we are seeking additional funding to extend it through the end of the year.

One parent shared that the Youth Program has made a huge impact on her son. "I just can't say enough about it! He's more responsible, confident and mature. We're thrilled with his progress!"

Some of the Youth Employees have already returned to class at GTCC. Others are home-schooled, and the majority attend Guilford County Schools. In addition, many students are required to complete 25 hours of volunteer service, and they can work with Growing High Point to complete their hours.

Some of our Youth Employees and Farmers in Training are hard at work in the heart of High Point, laying the groundwork for our fall harvest. At Growing High Point, the young farmers pictured are embracing the soon to be changes of the season by cultivating seeds that will soon transform into crops during the fall.

Both programs nurture a deeper understanding of farming, fostering sustainable practices, and building a stronger, self-reliant community. Through hands-on experience, the Youth Employees and Farmers in Training are learning the intricacies of agriculture while also serving High Point!

The impact of this initiative goes far beyond the garden beds. For these individuals, the experience is their first introduction to agriculture. It’s an opportunity to gain valuable experience and responsibility. The programs highlight the broader mission: to transform underutilized urban spaces into green areas that provide fresh produce but also a sense of connection to the community. By engaging youth in this, we are helping cultivate the next generation of leaders.

As they continue to cultivate seeds, they are not just prepping for the upcoming season, but for a more resilient community. Their work is a testament to the power of grassroots efforts and the potential to drive change, one seed at a time!

Growing High Point has made it easier for our community gardeners and urban farmers to access the Food Hub. The food hub is used for washing, drying, packaging, and storing fresh produce. The produce will either be included in a Free Farm Share or sold in the community on Growdega. In response to increasing demand, Growing High Point has expanded hours:

Mondays: 9am-12pm
Tuesdays: 9am-12pm
Fridays: 9am-12pm

National Night Out, an event that is focused on community connections and promoting police-community partnerships, took place on August 6. Amidst the community celebration, Growdega was invited to the Highland Mills community! Growedga helped create a vibrant appearance and offered fellow community members a taste of locally grown fruits and vegetables, thanks to the Lenny Peters Foundation and

National Night Out is a time where High Point came together to build relationships with law enforcement and strengthen the fabric of the community. This time, High Point took the mission to heart, not just garnering conversations about safety but also a key focus on wellness and access to healthy foods.

Growdega played an important role that night! At the event, the bright green bus attracted a steady stream of people. From crisp corn to juicy tomatoes, the mobile market offered something for everyone. In addition to providing food, fellow employees of Growing High Point gave tips on nutrition and healthy cooking.

The collaboration between National Night Out and Growdega shows the importance of community in different ways: safety, health, and connection. As the conversations grew that night, it displayed how a community was coming together to support one another.

Connections were made and seeds were planted with new community members. The smiles at the Growdega was a testament to the positive impact this initiative had on the High Point community!

Every Wednesday from 1:30-5 pm, the Community Clinic of High Point refills patients' prescriptions, but many patients are looking for more than their medicine. They want the $5 voucher that the CCHP gives them to shop for fresh, local produce on Growdega.

Since April, the Community Clinic of High Point has provided $2,439.26 in produce vouchers for their clients. Molly Jordan, CCHP's executive director, created the voucher idea to encourage patients to shop for healthy fruits and vegetables. In addition, she had a staff member educating patients about the voucher program and explaining the benefits of eating fresh, local produce.

One patient, when presented with her voucher, shared what a relief it was. She had just been diagnosed with diabetes and had no idea how to buy or make healthy food. She was thrilled to have access to produce and to hear from the GHP team how she could prepare her items.

Another individual gathered her items and presented them for payment. When the amount owed exceeded what she had, she was told that a CCHP volunteer had purchased produce and paid extra so she could cover someone else's purchase, so her purchase was covered. The patient was so grateful she cried and shared how much the access to fresh food meant to her.

"Molly and her team have been phenomenal partners, and we look forward to expanding this collaboration in the future," said Jodi Sarver, GHP's executive director.

Representative Kathy Manning was at 422 Tomlinson St. today to announce The Lighthouse - a creative space in the heart of SW High Point - that received $1 million in federal grant funding that she helped secure. This project is in an area that is in desperate need of reinvestment and TLC, and The Lighthouse is a part of the solution, along with the SW Heritage Greenway, which connects the SW and Southside communities to downtown. Manning thanked and Guilford County Government for their support, and we're all thankful for Manning's support of High Point throughout her career.

Growing High Point was well-represented at High Point University's AmeriCorps VISTA Showcase. Dani Rubio, GHP's VISTA, has been working to tell the story of our urban farms and farmers on our website, a project that helps build capacity, which is the goal of the program. Her work is not live yet, but we look forward to sharing it soon.

In addition, the Washington Street VISTAs (D-UP Inc., Resilience High Point, Creative Writing Center, and the City of High Point's Neighborhood & Community Development Division and GHP), won an award for their collaboration around planning a community event on Washington Street for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Wuiskary learned about Growing High Point at the@cityofhighpoint OpporTEENity Fair. She wanted to find a job and earn money, but she also has bigger aspirations.

"I want to own a business in the future, and seeing the process of 'Seed to Sale' at Growing High Point has helped me learn what it takes to run a business," she said.

Wuiskary loves to learn new things, including spending time with a slithery friend (see photo!) she met at the Backyard Garden. Sampling fresh fruit from the farms is another major job perk.

In addition to working on the farms, Wuiskary has worked at the , learning to operate the register and provide customer service, and at the Food Hub, packing boxes of produce for the Farm Fresh Nourish program, run in conjunction with Second Harvest Food Bank of NW NC and the Renaissance Church food pantry.

The Youth Employment Program has had another positive effect for Wuiskary: "It has taught me that sometimes you have to get along with people even if you don't like them." Well said!

The summer program campers visited Growing High Point's Urban Farm Network with Community Liaison Andre Davis. As they learned about gardening, they got hands on (and mouths on) some fresh produce. Andre has also been advising YWCA staff on their grow tower, and later this month he'll help campers plant the YWCA's raised bed garden. .hp and the High Point Public Library Power of Produce Club are also part of this successful collaboration.

Youth Employee Spotlight: Meet Noah McCall

Noah came to his Youth Employee interview 15 minutes early, wearing a shirt and tie. We liked him right away!

He had seen one of the "Grow Green, Earn Green" yard signs in his neighborhood that Growing High Point used for Youth Program recruitment and decided to apply. He thought the program would help him get outside more because he's usually "an inside person."

His favorite part of the job has been working on our farms, and he has worked on nearly all of them in addition to the High Point Farmers Market, community gardens, and with collaborations at the High Point Museum, D-Up, and Stock + Grain's new herb garden.

"Working with Growing High Point is really fun. I love it," Noah said. "I'm more fit now. I used to be a couch potato."

Although he's only 15, Noah wants to be a travel welder. "I didn't think I would want to go to college, but to see how people around me are so intelligent makes me believe in myself," he said.

Working with Growing High Point has other benefits as well.

"I can say that it has improved my communication skills," Noah said. "It's much easier to talk to people now."

It's also helped him set financial goals. He wants to use his earnings to get a pre-paid debit card and begin to establish credit. Earning money means he can also eat at Chipotle more, which is his favorite restaurant.

Noah's life quote is: "Be yourself, and know that that’s awesome enough."
