Leash Walking/Mount Sirius Challenge: Update

Three very ambitious dogs completed Stage 3, "The Tartarus Crevasse", this afternoon and are currently at an elevation of 8,008 feet on the mountain. The air is getting thinner and distractions are everywhere. It only gets more difficult from here.

Gus(Canada), Sousa(Israel) and Milo(The Philippines) are determined to plant their flag on the summit. They still have a long way to go and the climb becomes much steeper and more challenging in Stage 4, "The Cliff Face."

We are opening several more Stage 1 Base Camps over the next few weeks for anyone who interested in taking on the challenge. It's a lot of fun and a great way to improve your dog's leash walking.

We’ve launched something completely different at Sirius Strides. A leash walking training adventure built around the metaphor of climbing a mountain.

Every team begins at Base Camp, where we sharpen foundational skills before starting the ascent. From there, Climbers progress through seven increasingly challenging stages, each designed to match their growing control, composure, and teamwork.

Each week, as they advance, handlers physically move their dog’s marker up a large mountain mural we’ve painted on the wall, turning each dog into a game piece on a living board.

To make the journey even more fun, every participant chooses a country to represent. When they reach the summit, they’ll plant their country’s flag at the top.

It’s part leash walking class, part adventure, and part board game. A structured challenge that keeps everyone engaged, motivated, and moving with purpose.

If you want a training experience that feels like an expedition rather than a lesson, come join us on the mountain. The mountain is open from December 7th – March 31st. Enroll in a Base Camp online to get started.

We welcome everyone who earned their ticket, at Base Camp, to begin climbing at the Mount Sirius Leash Walking Challenge. It wasn't easy and it was great to see everyone working so hard.

Moka, Gus, Odin, Kona Mae, Milo and Bear were the first to dogs to meet the standards set at Stage 1/Base Camp of the Mount Sirius Leash Walking Challenge.

Each earned a ticket to officially begin the ascent. They move on to Stage 2/The Fracture Expanse, where their skills will be further tested.

We wish them luck. It will not be an easy trek ahead.

The next Base Camp opens Wednesday at 6pm for anyone else who wants to improve their leash walking.

The Leash Walking Mountain Challenge

Eight stages. One summit. From base camp to the peak, this challenge transforms leash walking into a true expedition.

Here’s how it works:

We’ve painted a physical mountain on our wall. Your dog's photo will be transformed into a game piece. As your dog’s leash skills improve, their photo climbs higher. This creates a visible journey of progress, improvement and partnership.

There are 8 Stages on the mountain: Each stage builds new leash walking skills. Once all the skills in each stage are completed, permission is granted to proceed to the next level of the mountain.

Our staff are your trail guides, leading multiple drop‑in sessions each week. They’ll help you navigate each step with clarity, helpful tips and encouragement.

The mountain is open December 7 – March 31.

The first Base Camp sessions open Sunday, December 7th at 1pm and Wednesday, December 10th at 6pm. You can sign up online.

Every Sunday at 10am, we host a free community dog walk at North Chagrin Reservation. It is open to anyone who wants to socialize their dog, connect with people and add a little joy to start the week. No sign up. We start at Parkview Pool in Mayfield Village. Come walk with us.

The walk has two rules. All the dogs are on standard leash and there is no contact between the dogs at any time.

Meet Ups are a great way to work on confidence building, leash walking and calmness around other dogs. It will start in the parking lot at the Nature Center.
