It's hot out! Lets talk about heat stroke.

Heatstroke occurs from being in hot or humid environments.
Other common causes of heat stroke include:
- Being left in a yard without access to shade or water on a hot day.
- Being exposed to a hair dryer for an extended period of time.
- Excessive or vigorous exercise during hot temperatures.
- Excited or excessively exercised dogs are sometimes at risk even if the environmental temperature and humidity does not seem high. This is particularly true if dogs are kept in a poorly ventilated environment or a dog house.

It is important to remember that dogs cannot control their body temperature by sweating as humans do since they only have a relatively small number of sweat glands located in their footpads. Their primary way of regulating body temperature is by panting.

Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, it’s extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when they’re around water.

If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.

- Avoid hot sand. Especially midday, sand can get blisteringly hot and can burn your dog’s paw pads. Consider booties to protect their feet from the hot sand or stick to walking along the water’s edge.
- Provide lots of fresh water. Your dog can get dehydrated quickly in the heat of summer, so frequently offer cool water to drink.
- Prevent your dog from eating sand. It can block your dog’s intestines.

July 15th is Feline Leukemia Day. Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a virus that infects cats. It was first discovered in cats with a form of leukemia (cancer of the white blood cells). FeLV can cause a variety of diseases in addition to leukemia. Like all viruses, FeLV is a tiny microorganism that can only replicate itself inside living cells. FeLV is specific to members of the cat family and does not pose a risk to other species of animals or people.
