Do you want a sweet and good girl? Foster Khia could be the one for you! Khia is a 9 yo petite girl, who is just starting to get a little frostiness on her face. She is so sweet and loves to snuggle with her human. She gets along well with other small dogs, but no big dogs please, because she was attacked by a German Shepherd when she was young. With Khia, the sweetness just keeps coming. She is being fostered in Wilton, Iowa. Remember, MWDR does not transport dogs to forever homes. You must come to her foster home for a meet and greet. If you've already filled out an applications, please just message us that you're interested in Khia.

Foster Khloe up Date:
Khloe got a excellent report from the vet yesterday - everything is looking real good. Her stitches were removed from her spay and bladder stone surgery. Her mouth looked pretty good from her extensive dental - one small fistula didn’t hold. Khloe is going to chill and heal for another couple of weeks then she will undergo another surgery to remove multiple mammary masses. Almost forgot the best news Khloe came into rescue weighing 18+ lbs. she’s now down to 16 lbs. Keep up the good work Khloe
Some of you may remember foster Lou. He came into rescue in January, 2022. He was in such bad shape, physically and emotionally. It took a while for us to get him in better shape and he was adopted by a wonderful family. His name is now Jerry and his family just shared a recent photo of him. They love him to the moon and back. This is why we do what we do!!
Seniors just wanna have fun! Foster Khia and her foster sister, resident doxie Gili, love to speed through the house. Khia (blue collar) is 9 yo and will begin looking for her forever home next week. She’s a sweet, active girl.
Khia is fostered in eastern Iowa. If you’re interested in Khia and have already filled out an application just send us a messenger message.
❤️ Welcome Aria ❤️
A special thanks to all the transporters - Roselee, Michelle, and Susan that helped bring Aria into rescue today. We would also like to thank everyone who joined in the fun of submitting a name for this little sweetheart. Although lots of folks loved the name “Honey” we chose Aria submitted Jill Millet (German meaning Free). Aria will now be free to enjoy life in a safe heathy environment with a family that will love her forever.
We took Aria to the vet today for bloodwork, exam, and vaccinations. She is 3 year old health female that was loaded with fleas causing some infectiion especially on her face. Once the fleas are gone she will be treated with medicated baths and antibiotics. Monday she will be spayed then she’s off to her foster home for some TLC. We will keep you updated on her progress and when she will be available for adoption.
Foster Happy update! Happy had her pacemaker surgery 2 weeks ago and is doing very well. She has ZERO collapsing episodes since her surgery. Yay!! She had her sutures removed today. The little lump seen in the recent photo is a fatty lipoma. Now that her sutures have been removed, she will have a nice warm bath this weekend. Happy is still on very restricted activity to ensure the lead (wire) of the pacemaker is not displaced from her heart as it heals. So far, so good for Miss Happy!
This honey is coming into rescue tomorrow. Her past is her past, now we can help with her future. She needs a name, we welcome suggestion please.

Foster Oakley! He has one more vet visit and then can be adopted. Of course this special guy needs a special home. He will be your best buddy and loves to snuggle. Oakley prefers women and will bond strongly with one but does need a warm up period. After days, he will get use to a male presence. Oakley has had extensive dental procedures and will need soft food and to be hand fed. He is fine as an only dog or with 1 or 2 other dogs. He should go to a quiet home with no children. He is being fostered in NW Indiana. He was an owner surrender and they said he is 8 years old. Please fill out adoption application at www.mwdr.org
Not a MWDR dog. This is Pascal who is with Alberts Dog Lounge Rescue https://www.albertsdoglounge.org/
Hello friends, I’m so excited to meet you! I’m a handsome 12lbs senior miniature dachshund. While I’m clearly a gorgeous pup, I’m looking for a home that can teach me how to “dog” and be patient with me while I overcome some fears. In fact, I’m dog friendly and another dog in the home is a must to show me the ropes since I want so badly to be part of the group!
You see, my first chapter was a rough one and I lived at a puppy mill. Because of this I was never taught to walk on a leash, so a securely fenced in yard will be necessary while I work on my outdoor potty training (currently a work in progress). Since I wasn’t properly socialized, I can find people pretty intimidating. I will need an owner who can give me space and improve my confidence, I will not be cuddly initially but am hopeful over time I will be! I have not lived with kids, but think it would be best to live in an adults only home since I’m such a timid guy.
I mentioned I’m gorgeous, right?! I’m continuing to increase my confidence level in my foster home and am looking for someone to show me that people can be loving and safe. Are you the special person that can help me blossom?
*Pascal is being fostered in Sturgeon Bay, WI.
Foster Khloe up date:
Khloe is recouping from surgery. She is getting stronger everyday. Last week she was spayed, had a dental with 18 extractions and several fistulas repaired and a couple of bladder stones removed. Her stones were sent out for biopsy. . Next Monday she goes in for a checkup plus her stitches removed at that appointment we will determine when she will be ready for her next surgery to remove her mammary masses.
Please keep her in your thoughts and 🙏
There’s a new foster in rescue.

Our sweet boy Gabe is looking for his Forever Family. Gabe is a 3yo that is being fostered in LaPorte, Indiana. Gabe’s best forever home needs to have another young well socialized playful dog and a fenced yard.
Check out his bio at MWDR.org

We have great news to share! Chili (r) found his forever home and is settling in with his dachshund brother Tate. Thanks for adopting, Cheryl and Mark. Cheryl and Mark have adopted multiple times from MWDR. A great way to start the new year.
Update on Foster Twix:
Twix is now up to 10.2lbs and continues to receive weekly enemas to help him stay on track. He is officially off ivermectin so we are hopeful that will help with reducing any constipation. He has started trying to go #2 outside now that he is becoming a bit more regular and continues to go #1 outside.
Majority of the week he is a happy go lucky puppy that loves to be with us and very curious. He is still a little timid with new situations but not a mean bone in his little body. He let us trim and file his nails today without any issues. He is continuing to learn puppy play and is now playing with more toys.
His next vet appt is 1/16 for neutering.
December 26th was our Blanche’s (now Moxie)
Gotcha Day. Moxie’s dreams have come true … she is truly blessed with a match made in heaven. Terri - Moxie’s mom sent a video
Fosters Milo & Pebbles are starting the new year off right with new Forever Family and Home and furry sister - Brittany.

Scruffy update:
We had hoped that Scruffy would up for adoption January 1 … however that is not going to happen quite yet. As you can see he continues to rebuild his leg and back muscles with aqua therapy. His progress is amazing. Scruffy has experienced a minor set back with right ear. When he came into rescue he had horrific ear infections … pus was draining from his ears. He had surgery to remove a small growth from one ear and lots of medication was packed in his ears. Everything was going great . Then his back went out and we had to focus on that. His recent vet exam showed bacteria in his his right ear so we had to do an ear culture. It indicated 3 types of bacteria in that ear … so it must be treated with specific medications. We are hoping Scruffy will be available by the end of January. Meanwhile we will continue aqua therapy.
Here we are closing out 2023, which marked our 20th year of being a dachshund rescue organization.
2023 was a difficult year for many people. Sadly, a lot of people needed to surrender their dachshund due to their own medical or financial issues. Many of those were urgent situations where you helped us act immediately by helping transport them into rescue. We appreciate your efforts!
Vetting costs for all have skyrocketed including us. We never refuse to take a dachshund due to medical costs. In the past, we have focused on taking medically needy dachshunds into rescue and we will continue this focus in 2024. You have helped us by your donations, attending fundraisers and participation in our online events. We appreciate your support!
During 2024 our focus will be threefold:
1) Increase the number of representatives we have located in Illinois and Wisconsin. They are the backbone of rescue. They manage their foster homes, coordinate surrenders, adoptions and foster dog vetting. Lots of hours are spent behind the scenes performing these necessary task.
2) We need to increase the number of our foster homes that are able to take a bonded pair. We realize this is not possible for all but it will be a focus in 2024 due to the number of owners having to surrender pairs.
3) We would like to put a volunteer in place to help on Facebook blocking the never ending spam posts.
We know with your help we will accomplish these goals as well!
On behalf of all of us at Midwest Dachshund Rescue, we share our best wishes for a Happy New Year.
Pictured are just a few of our fosters that have come into rescue. We love them all!

The video is of foster Happy having one of her cardiac episodes. Happy experiences these types of episodes multiple times per day. It happens when her heart rate gets too low...she topples over. She does not lose consciousness and is not in pain. This is the result of a condition called Sick Sinus Syndrome (SSS). She has been seeing the cardiologists at the University of Wisconsin Vet School. We have tried multiple medication scenarios which have helped but not completely. Therefore, on Friday sweet Happy will receive a pacemaker to keep her heart rate from getting too low. This is a major surgery. We'll make another post later today explaining the surgery and the pacemaker. Please send positive thoughts and/or prayers to Happy. Please help us to help Happy by purchasing quilt raffle tickets. Here is the link Thank you! https://mwdr.org/events/item/mwdr-medical-quilt-for-oakley-chloe-and-happy
Shelters do the best they can. Most are severely lacking resources. We are very thankful when they reach out to us. This sweetheart is now named Sparkle and thanks to transporters, Cathy and Cheri, she is on her way into rescue.
Lots of helpers to thanks. Haley drove the whole transport and it was a long drive up. Foster mom Mary let us use her back yard while we waited for our vet appointment. More info soon. I will say there are some tailwaggers.
Foster Tank has learned to go for short walks on a leash and harness. He has the cutest prance! Thanks foster mom Amber got your kindness and patience with him. Please see his bio at www.mwdr.org he needs a forever home
Foster Tank is looking for a forever home. He is fostered in NW Indiana and part of the adoption process is a meet and greet at his foster home. He is 11 years young and looking for a quiet home without any young kids or big dogs . Tank will need a fenced in yard as explained in his bio. See link https://mwdr.org/adopt/available-doxies/item/tank-fostered-in-nw-indiana

Foster Scruffy is work hard at aqua therapy today. It ‘s his second session and he is a real trooper … 18 minutes on the treadmill. We think he will do any thing for treats.
Look familiar? This is alum Percy. We love to see pictures and videos of alums. Makes us smile and helps the heartache that comes with rescue.
Black Friday fun for Fosters Felix & Rudi … sure beats shopping. Today was their first romp in the grass.
Pup Update: Felix and Rudi are now 7 weeks old and a little over 3 lbs each. They are eating puppy food now. Vienna (mommy) loves playing with them and snuggles too. They are so cute❤️❤️. In a few weeks they will go for their first check - up and vaccines.
Only 24 hours ago foster Gabe was released from a breeder. Fast forward to this. It made our hearts melt for him.
Update on sweet Rosie. This senior girl is just lovely! She went to the vet and they determined she has a hernia that needs to be surgically repaired right away. And if our vet feels that it is safe, she will get a much needed dental. Rosie loves everyone she meets. When she is out side she prances. It is just too cute.
Foster Miles, the big guy, welcomes new puppy Payton to rescue. Payton is your typical puppy who wants to constantly play with other dogs. He needs a vet visit before he can be listed for adoption.
We are introducing another of the 14 from the Long and Low Bunch (LLB). Beanie Boo went to his foster home yesterday. He is a very young male who needs to adjust in his foster home. We want to give a huge thank you to one of our vets. @Floosmoor Animal Hospital for letting us drop in with a carload and giving them the best care! As we have said, please do NOT submit any applications yet. We will announce when we can start processing apps. As many are young, there will be a ton of people wanting to adopt. So we will have a good problem. What we could use now are some donations on our Amazon Website Wishlist. Especially toys, puppy collars and peepads here is the link https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3EAW91VU2DL2F?
You’ve come a long way baby! Alums Annie (red) and Maddie (blue) are two dogs that needed socialization. Annie came from a commercial breeder and Maddie just didn’t have much socialization. Yesterday they had a play date. Just look at those happy wagging tails! We are so happy to see them coming out of their shells.
