When Gia was gifted a microphone she put it to good use with her loving best friend, and Zara the Rottweiler makes the perfect backup singer.

I am looking for a small dog to be a companion to my Very Sweet Female Boxer whose companion passed away and was a neutered male Jack Russell. It doesn’t have to be a Jack Russell. It can be any small dog mix, male or female, puppy or otherwise. I am very experienced with dogs, cats and horses having operated Countrytyme Boarding kennel for many years. Pat-Wyllie Bennett is my Facebook name!

The night before Thankgiving, I was walking through our basement with an armload of firewood when I saw something that I could not quite believe. It was confusing and heartrending at the same time. A small mouse was sitting upright in the middle of our basement. It was hunched over, hanging its head with its eyes closed, and this may sound crazy, but it looked sad and completely defeated.

I approached it slowly, hoping that it was just fast asleep, drunk on whatever food it had managed to scrounge from our cellar. Sadly, that was not the case. As I reached out a hand to let it know that I was close, it lifted its head, looked up at me sideways, and slumped, hanging its head and closing its eyes again. It made no attempt to move. It was vulnerable and helpless.

As I gently picked it up, it did not protest - it assumed the same position. It looked up at me once, dropped its head to its chest again and closed its eyes. Within a few minutes it was asleep in my hand.

Close inspection revealed an injured rear leg that the mouse was dragging behind it. We consulted with a wildlife rehabilitator who was at capacity but offered valuable advice. She said it was likely nerve damage and suggested a week of cage rest to see if the injury would resolve on its own. So we spent the holiday weekend creating a habitat for and feeding our new guest. And we are seeing significant progress already.

Our guest will be with us for a few more days, until it is strong enough to be integrated with a colony - at that time, we'll bring it to our dear friend Ellen Jareckie, a wildlife rehabilitator and the artist behind House Mouse Designs. She will keep the mouse through the winter and release it when it is stronger, in early spring.

I think it would be safe to assume that many who read this will believe that I am nuts for spending days trying to rehabilitate a mouse, and I understand. But seeing a small, helpless creature in a vulnerable state broke my heart. I had to do something.

Update: We adopted Pilgrim - he has a permanent injury so we cannot release him (he cannot run normally). But he is thriving, and he has his own Facebook group now.

Are you looking for a furry friend who loves to adventure and exercise? Izzy is a young German/Australian Shepherd mix (b. 11/2021) who is looking for a new home due to no fault of her own. This active, super smart girl would love to find an owner that is experienced with her breed(s). She will require daily exercise (couch potatoes need not apply!) and would like a future home that has a fenced yard for her to explore, learn, and play. Izzy LOVES to play fetch and will catch balls, frisbees, and even slam dunk her toys back in the basket (when she feels like it, of course! She is very smart and her current owner thinks she could be a really good candidate for agility training. Izzy's current family situation has changed so she's now living in an apartment and home alone quite a bit. As you might imagine, a young, energetic, intelligent dog needs more consistency, space for running, and time for training than she is currently receiving so Izzy is using her voice for attention. Her current owner thinks that she should not be a candidate for apartment living... she's still in young pup mode and needs space between the neighbors to work it out!
Like all young dogs, potential adopters should be prepared to continue working with this smart, sweet girl on all things puppy: introductions, potty training, kenneling, and all around family manners. Izzy has started to learn sit, stay, and quiet but needs some consistency to really master these skills. She alerts her owner when she needs to go potty and will use her kennel, but if she's left alone she gets nervous being caged up and will bark to let you know she wants out (wouldn't you?). Izzy has been around other dogs with no issues so she might enjoy having a playmate in her future home... another resident dog that can be her backyard buddy and guide her through all the tricks and training she needs in her young years! Izzy is a sweet girl, a 5 start snuggler, and would love a family that can give her the routine and time she needs to become her best self!
