Labor Day recognizes the achievements of the U.S. labor movement in the late 19th century. During this time, American workers began forming labor unions to advocate for better working conditions, reasonable hours, and fair wages.
The first Labor Day was observed on September 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by the Central Labor Union. In 1887, Oregon became the first state to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, followed by Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York later that year.
By the time President Grover Cleveland signed it into law as a federal holiday in 1894, 23 states had already adopted the holiday. Enjoy the weekend and the "unofficial" end of summer.

On this date in 1777, the Continental Congress approved a design for the United States flag, featuring thirteen white stars on a blue background and thirteen alternating stripes of red and white. The "Stars and Stripes" design was a symbol of the Union and represented a new constellation, honoring America's new status as an independent country.
Despite the prominence and instant familiarity of the American flag, its origins remain obscure. According to the most popular legend, George Washington gave seamstress Betsy Ross the task of creating the flag. The design was inspired by the Grand Union flag of the Continental Army and featured the thirteen stars arranged in a circle. The first Flag Act did not specify exactly how the stars and stripes should be laid out, resulting in inconsistent arrangements from one flag maker to the next.
Up until the early 1800s, Congress approved the use of additional stars and stripes as more states joined the Union. The modern flag started taking shape after April 4, 1818, when Congress restored the thirteen stripes in tribute to the original colonies and only added stars to welcome the admission of new states. Since June 14, 1877, the nation has celebrated Flag Day to commemorate the moment when the red, white and blue "Stars and Stripes" flag became the Union's shining symbol of liberty.

In 1953, a New Zealander named Edmund Hillary and his teammate, Tenzing Norgay, embarked on a daring expedition that would etch their names in the annals of history. They became the first climbers to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, the highest peak in the world. This feat in itself is awe-inspiring, but a small detail about their journey adds a touch of warmth and humanity to their monumental achievement.
Nestled in Hillary’s bag, amid the essential climbing gear and survival equipment, was a jar of marmalade. Yes, you read that right—a jar of marmalade. This traditional English spread, usually made from Seville oranges, was a comforting reminder of home for Hillary. It was his way of carrying a piece of his homeland with him as he ventured into the unknown.
This story is a reminder that no matter how far we venture from our comfort zones, we can always carry with us a piece of home—a physical object, such as Hillary’s jar of marmalade, a cherished memory, a familiar song or a beloved tradition. These small comforts can provide us with a sense of stability and grounding, even when we’re standing on top of the world.
Hillary’s trek also lets us reflect on the beautiful balance between adventure and comfort, of which we often think of as opposites. Adventure is associated with risk, uncertainty and the thrill of the unknown; comfort is linked to safety, familiarity and routine. But Hillary’s story reveals that they can coexist. In fact, the comforting reminders of home tend to give us the courage to venture into the unknown and take on new challenges.
Remember, no matter how far you travel, you can always carry a piece of home with you.
