While his owners were away, Banjo’s dogsitter found him unable to walk and rushed him to MedVet Columbus where Dr. Jessica Kmiecik and our Neurology team discovered a herniated disc in his neck. The pressure on his spinal cord was blocking communication between his brain and limbs, so Dr. Kmiecik performed a ventral slot surgery to relieve it.

After a successful surgery, Dr. Ann Bancroft recommended Rehabilitation to help Banjo regain his strength. With laser therapy, hydrotherapy, and physiotherapy, he made incredible strides—going from needing full assistance to walking 10 minutes on the underwater treadmill all by himself in just four sessions!

At his recent recheck, Banjo impressed everyone with his progress and officially graduated from rehab. 🎓 His resilience is nothing short of amazing—way to go, Banjo!

After experiencing difficulty breathing due to a large amount of air in his chest, a condition known as pneumothorax, Duke was referred to MedVet Houston Bay Area. Dr. Jeannie Clark from our Critical Care department quickly placed a tube in his chest to remove the air, helping him breathe more normally. However, Duke continued to leak air, so Dr. Max Banwell from our Surgery department stepped in to help.

The Critical Care and Surgery teams worked together seamlessly, performing a CT scan to pinpoint the issue. They discovered that one of Duke’s lung lobes was leaking air, so they performed surgery to remove it. The very next day, the chest tube was removed as there was no more air leakage.

After several days in the hospital with round-the-clock care, Duke went home and has been thriving ever since!

Duffy was referred to WestVet Boise by his family veterinarian after stumbling and collapsing when he stood up. After a thorough examination, our Cardiologist, Dr. Anna Sirochman, diagnosed Duffy with a 3rd degree AV block. This condition means that Duffy’s heart was beating too slowly, leading to low blood flow and low blood pressure, which made it difficult for him to stand and move around.

Duffy’s owners decided to have a pacemaker placed to help regulate his heart rate. Due to his low protein level, an epicardial pacemaker was recommended, requiring a different type of pacemaker lead. Duffy’s family and the St. Alphonsus Heart Institute’s Cardiac Cath Lab connected our team with a local Boston Scientific rep, who generously provided the team with this special pacemaker lead in time for Duffy’s procedure. With the expertise of Surgeon Dr. Katy Campbell, Cardiologists Dr. Jason Arndt and Dr. Anna Sirochman, and Anesthesiologist Dr. Morgan Oakleaf, Duffy’s procedure was a resounding success. He has made a complete recovery and is back to his playful self!

Last year, when Abbey's family let her outside, she was accidentally knocked over by her larger housemates. At first, she seemed fine, but a few days later, she was unable to walk. Her family brought her to MedVet Pittsburgh's board-certified Neurologist and Neurosurgeon, Dr. Jacob S. Leslie for evaluation.

An MRI of her neck revealed bulging discs pressing on her spinal cord, causing significant compression. One disc, in particular, was especially severe.

Dr. Leslie performed ventral slot surgery, a procedure to remove the herniated disc material and relieve the pressure on her spinal cord. Abbey’s recovery was nothing short of amazing! Before her one-month recheck appointment, she was already back to her old self, running and playing just like before. We are so proud of Abbey and her family for their resilience and dedication. 💙

MedVet is celebrating National Nonprofit Day by spotlighting a very special program near and dear to our caregivers: the AVMF REACH Program.

We understand unexpected pet emergencies and specialty veterinary care may be a financial burden for pet families — this program breaks down barriers to access veterinary care by offering grants to over 100,000 AVMA members nationwide. Through the AVMF REACH Program and on behalf of our clients, MedVet veterinarians proudly support charitable care when financial barriers could keep patients from getting the care they need.

If you're interested and able to support pet owners in financial need, please consider making a donation to AVMF's REACH Program by clicking the donation link on this post.
