🛑Important Notice - Save This Life Microchips:

As you may have seen, the microchip company Save This Life has ceased operations nationwide.

Our English Setter Rescue relies on veterinary clinics and shelters to microchip dogs entering our foster program. A variety of microchip companies are used. While we do not believe that Save This Life is a widely used company with our foster and adopted dogs, it is ALWAYS a good idea to have your dog’s chip checked!

Save This Life is no longer responding to customer inquiries via phone, email, or other communication channels. As a result, these microchips are no longer functional for reuniting lost pets with their owners.

To ensure your pet’s microchip remains a reliable safety measure, we strongly recommend transferring its registration to my24pet.com microchip registry AND/or one of the other reputable companies listed below.

✅ My24pet.com – is a free, universal registry compatible with all microchip brands. We recommend registering your microchip here even if you are already registered with another company as well. This is a very rescue friendly database.

⚠️ To determine whether your pet’s microchip was issued by Save This Life, you can check its number using the AAHA Universal Microchip Lookup Tool at aaha.org

Pepper, now Piper, came to OESR in April of 2024. She and her sister both tested positive for heartworm disease. At 2 years old, with boundless puppy energy and a high prey drive, just imagine how challenging 4 months of PROJECTED rest would be for some humans to manage. What if we told you that it was recommended that Pepper not be allowed off leash for several months BEYOND that projection. 🤯

After going through routine treatment for heartworms, there were still microfilaria (baby worms) in Pepper’s bloodwork. This meant that she needed to wait an additional month to see if her preventative would do the work it was intended to do. Thankfully, a month later her bloodwork yielded results we had all been hoping for. The medical recommendations following this good news was to keep Pepper on leash only, even in a fenced area, until January of 2025. She has a big test coming up this month. She could use all the positive setter vibes sent her way for some good news!

What a long journey it has been for her. Participating in the Envelope Challenge and helping add an additional $5,000 to OESR’s medical fund truly does make a difference. We never know what kind of expenses, medical care, or time will be needed for a dog. Once the dog enters OESR’s foster program, having the means to tackle the challenges makes a difference, one dog at a time.

Hunter could possibly hold the record for having the longest run as a foster dog before going to his adoptive home in 2024. He was with his foster family for close to a year! 😲 He had an injury of an unknown origin when he arrived. Healing was slow. He had to have a drainage tube inserted and even when it finally came out, this poor boy still ended up having to have it put back in for a bit. Hunter lacked some socialization when he arrived. Once he was on the mend, it took him awhile to learn how to be a confident dog. He needed a very special adopter that would set boundaries and not let him use his cuteness factor to get his way all the time. He also needed someone who would continue to expose him to new situations very slowly. Time can be a gift! Thankfully his foster family was able to give him the time that he needed to find his ideal adoptive family.

Anyone remember the puppies born in rescue in 2024? Here’s an update on one of them.

After his dog mom was picked up from an animal control facility by her Knight in Shining Armor, she started delivering puppies within hours. You only need to glance at the photo to imagine how difficult giving birth is when you are already so compromised. This story DOES have a happy ending, though.

Puppy Boone, fka a “P” puppy, is thriving in his forever home. A big birthday is approaching. The rest of the “P” puppies and mom are all going great. What a difference an ALMOST year can make!

The annual Envelope Challenge is in full swing. Your support, participation, and contributions do mean so much for the dogs. It is what allows OESR to provide a safe place and medical care to have success stories to share. Please visit https://oesr.org to learn more about the organization or to donate! Thank you for your consideration.

Darcy is not in Iowa anymore! This sweet gal arrived to sunny Florida on a Christmas Eve flight, with the support of Pilots N Paws! She is hunting storks, squirrels, gators, and even a new battery for the golf cart! She goes everywhere with her foster. She is adjusting well to life in the south and intends to stay put! She is doing great with her daily medication and can breathe easy and rest peacefully, home and loved!

Our English Setter Rescue

OESR is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) non-profit breed rescue. Founded in Ohio and formally known as Ohio English Setter Rescue, we have fosters and volunteers throughout the continental United States.

With so many unwanted animals found as strays or entering shelters every year, we use volunteer power to save this unique, elegant, fun and lovable breed: The English Setter. We have adopters and supporters from coast to coast and happily share in the idea of personal connection and communal pride in helping setters in need. So we invite you to be a part of OESR and see how you can find a place to call your own in this wonderful community of English Setter Lovers.
