Merlin is out of surgery ... Update from Dr Bowman from The Good Karma Project

Update on the "Blob"

🥁 The puppy has a name 🎉 Our partnership with The Good Karma Project whose founder just happens to be a veterinarian at Cumberland Animal Clinic which just happens to be the intake veterinary location just happens to be Merlin's medical foster for him 💕 (Say that without taking a breathe 🤣 but in all fairness it is a very intricate part of Merlin's journey)

As late as it was on Friday evening when both Dr Bowman and our rescue received the exact same plea, Merlin's medical journey had to be limited on Saturday morning. Exhausting many resources and discussions well after 6pm Saturday, we knew we had a few days to observe Merlin and his care being provided by Dr Bowman. With no idea what we are dealing with the following has been ruled out:

No hernia (radiographs & ultrasound performed)
No visible testicles which may be cryptorchid?
No blockage in the bowel

All other medical issues - there are none. Healthy, approximately 4 months old, 22 #. Hospitality update report says "He’s been a perfect houseguest too no partying in his crate and he’s quiet and he’s been great with my other dogs"

So ... With 4 medical opinions, 2 of which have not seen Merlin however, have reviewed the radiographs and ultrasound, we are faced with several opinions of what we are dealing with. There are some agreements on partial issues which may be probable. The only way we will know is to do the exploratory surgery. The Drs can do what is necessary to keep Merlin alive with quality of life. That's a lot to take in.

We will exhaust every resource possible as we always have. Tuesday morning we should know when Dr Jehn has availability to give us additional information once he has examined Merlin. Michele is driving out on Wednesday to meet Merlin and everyone who is part of his journey.

910pm Friday night the rescue messenger gets a 911 request for a 4 month old puppy in distress. That's when Merlin's journey began and he had no idea how wonderful it was about to be ❤️

Puppy update : (The Blob update #2)

(I literally fell asleep sitting in front of the computer as I was putting this together last night. My apologies for the delayed update)

Puppy (no name confirmed yet) received the Royal treatment from the medical staff at Cumberland Animal Clinic led by Dr Bowman. Tests, X-rays, ultrasound. Dr Bowman reached out to two other specialists in the area for assistance. The blob was still unknown in origin. Palpable, they did an aspiration to observe what they couldn't see. Nothing abnormal. The radiographs show nothing obstructing, no foreign matter, no abnormal growths or impairments. Every professional had a different possibility. Locally, Dr Mike and Dr Neihaus weighed in with their medical opinions although the puppy wasn't present. The Blob wasn't providing any viable information to help this guy.

The Blob isn't going to win. This sweet baby deserves comfort and quality of life. In the next few days he will go in to see another specialist, Dr Jehn. (CT scan has been suggested and an internal ultrasound has also been discussed) We've not given up. Exploratory surgery will be the only option at this point. Sometimes we roll the dice and pray for a miracle. This may be one of those times.

Puppy is 22 # and appears otherwise healthy. At 4 months old he is everything a puppy should be. Playful and fun. Whatever this is the puppy has adjusted to its presence. Aesthetically it's just a Blob. Medically, it is not explainable YET. For now, Puppy is spending his waiting time with Dr Bowman at her office and home.

Warning ... You may find some pictures disturbing

January 3rd 2025

69 hours 10 minutes into a new year and this is sent to us . Rescue never stops. We are stretched beyond stretched and then we get the next medical case request. In all of our years in animal welfare we have never seen this type of a "growth" on a dog. This is a 4 month old puppy. To be fair, we have spoken with others in veterinarian positions and they are guessing as well based on the pictures.

So .... Guess you already know this little guy needs our assistance. With the level of medical care we've provided since our mission became that of a specialized medical dog rescue in 2014 to "Rescue by Need - Not by Breed" we feel we can offer him comfort and quality of life care regardless of the diagnosis we receive once all tests are done.

We DO NOT have any information other than he is 4 months old. That's all. We've dealt with less than that in the past. Once details are available and we have this guy in our hands we will post for donations.

We will also need a foster home for him. In a case such as this we have no idea for how long however, we would like him to experience a family home life with lots of love. He deserves that like any loving puppy would.

The rescue ranch has continued to experience a flurry of shredded toys and playful shenanigans on days 3 and 4 after Christmas. Did you know that it snows in Florida?

The past few days have been a delightful journey and we anticipate many more photos and laughs to come. Most dogs relish the toys and treats, while a few remain skeptical. By day's end, the dogs have enjoyed ample fun, treats, and belly rubs before bedtime. We are grateful for the generous donations and Christmas gifts.

Each dog is savoring the daily festivities and numerous treats. Clean up is a gradual process. Isn't it all about the joy and playfulness of a happy dog?

Day 2 Christmas with the Dogs (new pictures)

Some of our dogs are chewers and we spared new beds the chew down and clean up. New blankets and toys with lots of treats. The curiosity and then contentment of settling in and getting to play was on the nighttime agenda. (Tonight's pictures are from the main building where the large dogs are housed)

We moved items around based on sizes and likes/dislikes. Every dog was spoiled beyond their wildest imagination. Thank you to everyone for every gift. Every bed and blanket. Every treat bag, box and bone. Toys and more toys. Your generous donations provided a very special Christmas.

Christmas 2024 has been so much fun. Playing with all the toys and watching the dogs with their goodies brought a sense of gratitude. These moments are precious and cherished.

As we welcome Christmas Eve 2024, it's remarkable how swiftly the holiday season has arrived. During this busiest time of the year, our organization has been working diligently to provide for the 31 dogs in our care. Your exceptional generosity, our amazing donors, has made this holiday season truly unforgettable for the dogs we rescued this year.

Since November, our team has been actively engaged every weekend, participating in Christmas events and gifting our pet pantry recipients with an array of essentials, including food, blankets, treats, toys, sweaters, dog/cat collars, and leashes, all neatly packaged in Pet Supplies Plus gift bags. We are deeply grateful for the community's support and the ongoing donations that facilitate our pet pantry's operations.

With the holidays approaching quickly, we have received inquiries regarding the ranch dogs. Every year we have Sponsor A Ranch Dog for Christmas. With things as difficult for many this year we did not want to impose ourselves as we have been very fortunate this year and the amazing community partnerships we have made.

Then I was reminded that there are many who want to give to the dogs on our ranch because they've become family in a unique way.
