Volunteers are the key to successful adoptions and transitions for the dogs at Paw Pals. Precious Cupcake has been a long time resident at Paw Pals and has known little of the outside world. Our stellar volunteer Barb, and husband Tommy, took Cupcake out for a trip to the park so she could experience a bit of the world. We are hoping Cupcake will soon find a forever home where she is loved, but our amazing volunteers make life at Paw Pals comfortable and almost home while they wait!
Please consider becoming a volunteer! The dogs and cats need you!

Happy Thanksgiving! Here’s a story of thanks to our giving community. My name is "Hope". I was given my name while enroute for emergency care ("hoping" I would survive). I was rescued off a busy street and was quickly observed as being listless and severely anemic (my gums were white). Being anemic simply means I didn't have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout my body. During my veterinary examine, it was determined that my condition was the result of heavy infestation of parasitic worms. I was being eaten alive. I was provided a blood transfusion and because of additional medical treatment I will have my health. I started my life as a product of pet overpopulation with no value, and was thrown away. Because my guardian angel was with me, I fell into the loving hands of Paw Pals volunteers. Because of people volunteering their time and with community financial support, Paw Pals is able to help souls such as me. Their largest expense is veterinary care. Without you, my life would have simply been an unnamed statistic. Happy Thanksgiving! With love, "Hope” (PS Hope recovered and is living in a wonderful home)

This story is from a year ago but NEGLECT to our companion-animals still remains…
A message from “Mariah”
My name is “Mariah”. I died today from human neglect. I do want you to know that the last few days of my life were filled with love and caring from Paw Pals volunteers—emotions absent from my life. I will be given a burial—perhaps the kindest gift ever given to me. Hill County continues to be plagued with unwanted dogs and cats because of people not being responsible. I was found underneath a rural house by a Good Samaritan and taken to Paw Pals. At first, the kind volunteers thought I was pregnant because of my swollen body. It was during my bath that a hole in my eye was discovered (yes, it was painful). I was then taken for a medical evaluation where it was determined that all my aliments were from severe neglect (starting with my infected eye). Besides harboring every parasite listed (heartworms, parasitic worms, fleas, ticks, etc.), my body was filled with fluid fighting multiple internal infections. I simply had to let go to end my suffering. Sadly, all my ailments could have been prevented. Like all living creatures, I didn’t want to die. The short period of warm love I felt from the volunteers at Paw Pals will never be forgotten. I died today but at least I didn’t die without love because of your support for this wonderful group making every effort to correct the wrongs of pet-overpopulation caused by human neglect. God bless you, “Mariah”

Did you know Texas law directs all dogs and cats after four (4) months of age be vaccinated against the rabies virus and remain current with annual or triennial boosters. In fact, it is a criminal penalty if found in violation (Class C Misdemeanor which is a fine of up to $300). One can be subjected to a Class B Misdemeanor (up to $1,000 fine) if previously convicted. $5 RABIES Vaccinations, TUESDAY, November 7 (no appointment needed—walk-in). Hello, do you recall me from earlier FB posts? I was given the name “Crosby”. I was found as a stray by a Good Samaritan in the Bynum area. It was evident that my hind leg was injured as I didn’t put weight on it. Well, after entering Paw Pals’ shelter, I was taken to a veterinarian for an exam. X-rays showed that by body is filled with pellets from a shotgun blast. My kneecap and joint is shattered so my leg will soon be amputated. I’m praying that a pellet(s) didn’t pe*****te any organs. I have already demonstrated that I’m “man’s best friend” because I continue to give unconditional love to humans—even after someone took aim and shot me. Please help Paw Pals—their operation is total volunteer. Please consider sponsoring a spay/neuter surgery to help rid pet overpopulation in our community. If all dogs & cats had homes and strays didn’t exist, perhaps my life would have had value to the person that mercilessly shot me.

$5 Rabies vacs TODAY 10am-12pm @ Paw Pals, 1500 South Abbott Avenue (SH-81), Hillsboro. Rabies virus exists in our community. Rabies is the most dangerous zoonotic disease (animal to human) known to man. Once rabies virus is inoculated into a muscle from a scratch or bite, it travels to the brain. Once rabies symptoms appear, it is nearly 100% fatal. Texas law directs all dogs and cats after four (4) months of age be vaccinated against the rabies virus and remain current with annual or triennial boosters. In fact, it is a criminal penalty if found in violation (Class C Misdemeanor which is a fine of up to $300). Heartworms is a potentially fatal disease in dogs and cats BUT CAN BE prevented. Heartworms are transmitted from MOSQUITOES. Heartworms grow to be foot-long worms that live in heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body. Up to 250 worms can be in an affected pet. Have your dog or cat checked for heartworms at TCAP’s next visit at Paw Pals October 3 (TUESDAY) from 10:00am-12:00pm. “Sadie” resided with fosters Sharon & Mike Robinson. “Sadie’s” earthly journey ended this morning. She was found last month abandoned by a Good Samaritan. Because her condition was obviously needing veterinary attention, she was taken for an exam. Besides being very senior, she was malnourished (to the point of hair loss), had arthritis, left eye was blind (from untreated infection) and “lumps” were discovered on her body—suggesting “lymphatic related cancer”. At the time, the veterinarian wanted to wait on spay-surgery until her health stabilized. This morning she had a severe seizure leaving her unable to stand. She was taken to the vet where she was “let go” with Sharon & Mike beside her. She was buried today but not without love. RIP sweet “Sadie”.

Hillsboro’s Sesame Juniorettes raised funds to provide Paw Pals with supplies and treats. This group is a service organization that works throughout the year with fundraising efforts to support other organizations in our community. Their main goal is to give back and lead by serving others. Pictured with this group of young leaders are Stephanie Tucker (Jr. Sesame Sponsor) and Julie Cauzza (Paw Pals volunteer). Scott & Holly Read adopted "Tango the Tornado" about two years ago. They sent an updated picture. "Tango" is one of many cattery volunteers’ success stories. In the beginning, "Tango" was completely feral and it took 9 months to get her adoptable. Many thanks to our cattery volunteers for making such happen (pictured are Desiree & Victoria). Please consider YOUR spare time as a volunteer—our dogs & cats need YOU.

Hello, “Brynn” here. I know I’m one of many that has been “sheltered” at Paw Pals. I’m a senior dog that was found abandoned in very poor health. Beside having hair loss from malnutrition and skin infections from fleas, I was diagnosed with Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS)…whew! What a complicated aliment…let’s just say “dry eye” (in both eyes). My eyes were in great pain. Such condition causes inflammation of the cornea and surrounding tissues from drying simply because of inadequate production of tears. Both of my tear ducts were not working! Without medical intervention, extensive corneal scarring was going to continue leading to blindness. Fortunately, my vision was saved because of your support for Paw Pals’ “shelter”. This allowed me to visit a veterinary ophthalmologists and my condition was reversed. I’m now adopted by a loving family. I feel so fortunate that my life turned to the better—thanks to YOU, as a supporter, for making this possible. Love, “Brynn”

All dogs & cats who come to our “shelter” have their story…most center on sad abandonment but some are heart-filled. “Beu” (aka “Rambo”) was found guarding his deceased owner. “Beu” grew into being a “one person” dog. His entire life was devoted to his caring owner and he was willing to give his life to continue guarding his owner’s lifeless body. “Beu” literally had to be pulled-away. When he came to Paw Pals, he was completely unsociable…attacking anyone that came near him (before/after pic). Fortunately, volunteers Sharon & Mike Robinson saw tenderness is his loyalty and wanted him to be part of their family. LOVE turned “Beu’s” loving devotion to the Robinson’s and now he’s part of this forever family. Thank you Sharon & Mike for your committed compassion. Please join Sharon & Mike volunteerism—our dogs and cats need you!

Did you know Paw Pals greatest expenditure is veterinary care? Since we are 100% volunteers (no salaries) and our building is paid in full (no mortgage), nearly every donated dollar goes towards care of our “sheltered” dogs & cats. Pictured is a puppy that was abandoned with a snakebite. She was taken to Young’s Animal Hospital for emergency care. Thank you Dr Arnold, Dr Horn & Vet Tech Summer for your outstanding veterinary care. The puppy responded immediately to treatment (before & after pictures). The puppy is now tagged for her forever home.
