It’s almost Futurity day!! (November 15th!) so here are ten things I wish someone told me!

1. Trust your training. Don’t let the date make you push your horses faster than they are ready to go. Remember, you’re in this for the long haul… not just the one show.

2. Even though we all look up to those top trainers, they can be beat, even by someone one in left field. You never know you can, until you do, and everyone has to start somewhere!

3. If your runs don’t go as planned… regroup. Not all horses come out the gate swinging. Some need a little time to settle into the new routine.

4. A bad exhibition or run does not define your horse. Sway ducked in her slot race exhibition, but I trusted my training and she came through when I needed her. 🦄 If something just doesn’t feel right, rule out pain first, always.

5. Most importantly, don’t forget you can’t train your horse at the show… of course we can all make small adjustments, but your horse is either ready or not, and no amount of drilling on one is going to change the outcome. A horse can only put out, what we as the trainers put in. So make sure your self reflection game is on point.

6. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and if that doesn’t go your way, ask someone else. Never stop learning, we owe it to our horses to be the best we can be. If you don’t understand something, seek the knowledge. Ask why. I know those around me get tired of how much I ask “why.” 😅

7. Don’t forget this is supposed to be fun. It’s always a struggle, training, soundness, competitions, but when it all comes together, it’s sure worth it.

8. Help others. Even one positive vibe can change someone’s day.

9. Remember you can’t do this alone. It takes a stellar support system. I am very grateful to my vet, Dr Lee of Double X Equine and my farriers Cutter and CJ Holloway, Kim Gillepsie my Chiropractor and all the others that make this ride a little more like a Mercedes’ and a little less like an old Bronco. 😅 Communication is Key.

10. Don’t be held back by self imposed limitations. If you want something bad enough, put in the work, the extra time, the miles, and accomplish what you set out to do. There are a million people with a million excuses, and there are a million more doing it, with everything against them. I promise, YOU can do it. Write down your goals and CRUSH THEM.

The valley of despair 😩

The place absolutely every person goes to directly after they write down their goals, get very excited about them, make a plan and then……..start to doubt.

So few people make it out of the valley of despair. We scroll through an endless loop of people’s highlight reels online. See how quickly they’re progressing and then start to reassess our goals.

That’s when doubt comes in to make us lower our expectations, tell us why we aren’t worthy, and push us back into our comfort zone.

As we being this new year, I challenge you, when the doubt inevitably starts to lie to you to CHANGE THE STORY.

You can have a discussion with yourself that goes something like this: “oh I see I’m in the valley of despair. Hmmmmm all I have to do is keep pushing and I’ll be doing better than 95% if all people pursuing their goals. All I have to do is persevere. All I have to do is not give in. I just have to settle into the discomfort and keep tuning out doubt. I’ve got this!”

Keep pushing 💪🏾

Hey Cowgirl,

Don’t forget that when you started, you were a little person who thought horses were magical.

Don’t forget that you didn’t have any pressure - just the love of seeing what cool things they could do.

Don’t forget that before you feared the judgment of others, you forgot anyone was watching.

Don’t forget that little you is so proud of you.

But also, don’t forget to push yourself as hard as you can now that you’re living your dream.

Don’t settle. Don’t make your dreams smaller. Don’t shrink yourself so you can fit in with the non-dreamers. Don’t give up on yourself, and don’t let your emotions take over.

Don’t ever let her down. The you before the world shaped you. 🥰💪🏾🥹

I didn’t know that this day in the round pen with my 5 yr old made who was very late to get started would change my entire life.

I didn’t know that I was looking at a Breyer horse collectible doll.

I didn’t know I was spending my days with the AQHA Horse of The Year.

I didn’t see the staircase before I took the first steps.

One major thing I have learned over the years is that it isn’t the major crossroads of life decisions that make all the difference. ITS THE TINY ONES!

Tiny tiny choices. What you have for dinner. Watching that show or reading a book. Listening to a podcast or going out with your friends.

There’s a time and a place for all the fun in the world but I firmly believe that everything I’m sowing right now I will reap in 5 years. So if I slack now - I better be ready to bust my 🍑 years from now. If I want to take a day off - I better bust my 🍑 today!

This is a nice article about serviceably sound horses 🐴

When I first got out of veterinary school and started looking at horses prior to purchase (usually referred to as a “vet check” or a prepurchase exam), the horses usually fit into one of three categories. The first category was the horse with no problems noted at the time of the exam. That decis...

"HOT" TIPS FOR SAFE SUMMER RIDING

As you enjoy some fun in the sun with your favorite equine, make sure you understand how the combination of heat and humidity can take the fun part out the equation — and potentially even turn into a dangerous situation for your horse.

When riding in hot weather, remember to take precautions and use your common sense. Remain vigilant for dehydration and for signs of heat exhaustion, as the situation can quickly escalate into heat stroke. If your horse looks hot and tired, it's time for a drink, a cold bath and a break in the shade.

Consult your veterinarian for more information, or learn more about the signs of heat stroke on our website at https://aaep.org/issue/heat-stroke

COOL SCIENCE (pun intended)!

An old myth wants us to believe that horses should be walked until they cool completely after exercise, even in the summer. However, a study from 2020 looked at five different ways to cool a horse after exercise: walking, walking with fans, walking with intermittent cold water application, walking with intermittent cold water application and scraping, and stationary with continuous tap water application. As it turns out, the method that resulted in the quickest return to normal body temperature was stationary with continuous tap water application (2 minutes), while walking alone took the longest time for recovery (25 minutes).

Bottom line: enjoy your rides in the sun this summer but remain vigilant for signs of heat stress in your horse. If they look tired, it’s time for a drink, a cool bath, and a break in the shade.
