💜 Deja is now 8 months old.
I raise my puppies a little differently than your average dog owner. I focus much more on relationship building through play, adventuring together and quality time spent than I do on obedience skills.
⭐ I really only work on a small number of obedience skills. Name recognition to set a strong foundation for recall and handler focus. I may throw in one or two others depending on the dog and the situation.
⭐ I do a lot of food luring but I don't put a verbal cue to much of anything for a long while so, yes, my puppies are introduced to many of the obedience positions but nothing is really taken beyond that for awhile.
⭐ I work on quite a few life skills: behavior at thresholds, crate training, house training, body handling tolerance, wearing a collar and leash, staying off counters and out of the trash, stay off furniture unless invited, car rides, no chasing kitties, respect the other household dogs communication and a lot, a lot, a lot of exposure to the world. I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting to include here.
⭐ We play together every day. We use lots of different types of toys and we play a lot of different games. Tug, fetch, hide and seek, we wrestle and rough house, we run, explore and pounce at each other.
I don't rush into obedience skills with my baby puppies but they are with me all the time. A lot of rewarding for good choices, a lot of management and a lot of time spent on building a bond and letting the puppy experience the world. Once I have a good foundation set with these things, the obedience skills come easily and usually pretty quickly.
Deja is ready to start working on our obedience skills more seriously now. We've got big goals coming for 2026 (I'll post about that a little later in January) and a lot of work to do to get there. It's go time!!
🎯 What are your 2026 goals?! Post them in the comments below. They don't have to be goals that include your dog, I want to hear them all!! ⬇️
