"E...D...U...C...A...T...I...O...N..." It's out there. Look for it.

It is almost impossible to learn dressage-based concepts without first knowing what the various terms mean, words and phrases like “engagement,” “on the aids,” “inside leg to outside rein,” “over the back and through.”

We don’t teach kids to read before they learn the alphabet, or to do math problems before they know the numbers. And yet all over the world there are riders and drivers diligently taking dressage lessons who couldn’t correctly define “engagement” if they would win a vacation to Cancun by doing so.

There is a word for the so often missing link.
E-D-U-C-A-T-I-O-N

So many riders don’t read. They don’t study. They hear these words and phrases, even in lessons, without taking the time or making the effort to actually figure out what they mean.

If we were told, “If you bring me a totlefrat, I will give you a million dollars,” the most logical first question would be---“What is a totlefrat?”

How can we learn it before we know what “it” is?

This study has certainly brought up many questions for me. How fair is it for us to ask our dogs to do agility when we don't have an easy way to test their vision?

I learned a new term today: Dialogue Learning
"I see the dog's behavior as influential data not about what's wrong with the animal but what's wrong with my training. And then I revise; I become a better trainer." For a mind blowing and inspiring experience, listen to this podcast of an interview with Susan Friedman. I might recommend starting your listen at 21:00 minutes where they start talking about actual training examples and then go back to the start where they talk about the definition of terms.

Talented dogs take us to a new level of handling. Challenging dogs take us to a new level of training. - Kathy Keats (And in Jaime's case he was talented AND challenging. And taught me so much.)

We see this frequently in nosework and some feel it’s a sign of stress but could it simply be the dog finds the presence of odor exciting?

Very proud of little Spriggs. She came in 6th in the Moncure, NC Elite trial even with missing 2 hides in the first search which were totally my fault because I had to rush her out of the area because I saw she needed to p**p (note to self: make sure she p**ps BEFORE the large exterior search!) Here is one of her searches. There were an unknown number (there were 6) and we had 4 minutes, 30 seconds to search. https://youtu.be/pwL4T1EG6tA
