Service Dog and Skilled Companion Dog
We are a owner participation program. The handler will attend class after placement of their dog to continue training. All placements must be local to Naperville Il. we do not place dogs out of our area. A Service Dog is individually trained to meet the needs of its handler, both in the home and in the community. A service dog is trained to perform a mini
mum of two custom tasks for a person with a ADA disability. This dog will receive a service dog vest and will have public access right to accompany their handler in non dog friendly environments Special program requirements must be met including but not limited to the V.I.P. training test to graduate. Each dog goes through an extensive assessment evaluation for temperment, All dogs complete basic obedience skills. After Basic Obedience, dogs move into specialized training, Opening doors, retrieving dropped items, pulling a wheelchair, turning on lights, alerting to the doorbell/phones, and bracing. Each dog received training in their handlers needs. SKILLED COMPANION DOG. A skilled companion dog is trained in basic obedience skills and some custom tasks to assist a client with different abilities . The dog is not granted public access and is trained to assist the client only in the home. All service dogs must attend Monday evening classes. Class is mandatory. The required time depends on the dog and the handler. occasionally offers a emotional support dog. this dog receives basic obedience with no specialized training. Please note that VIP serves individuals covering a wide range of disabilities. However, VIP does NOT train or place dogs for the following; to guide or work for the blind, to do seizure/ diabetic alert or any medical alerts, or to respond aggressively, to provide personal protection. It is important to remember that although assistance dogs are highly trained in many commands, they are not machines.
