We recently had the pleasure of providing a tour, along with a brief history of the free-roaming herds, coal mining and culture of Eastern Kentucky to the University of Kentucky Animal & Food Sciences Department Chair and the Director of Strategy for Equine Initiatives, along with Kentucky Horse Council.

We are thankful for their support and excited about future partnerships with the Ag Equine Program students!

On this Veteran Day and everyday we honor our many men and women who have served to protect and defend our nations freedom. Thank you for your courage, commitment and sacrifice you and your families have made on our behalf.

We also recognize and remember all the war horses who have also served along side our troops over the years. Click on the link below for a short video of one of these brave horses - Sgt. Reckless. https://youtu.be/YIo3ZfA9da0?si=YRCOEKVkCIDenNVK

Has anyone lost a couple hounds in Breathitt County around Elk View? They’ve been hanging out by the campground for several days.

Isn’t that a good looking pasture! Thanks to our supporters we’ve been able to hire a local contractor to bush-hog a field on the mountain to help increase the grazing area for the horses. We hope to be able to do more of this in the future, as we can afford. This will be more beneficial when the spring grass comes in, and there aren’t so many briars and bushes that keep the horses from accessing it. Big thanks to the landowner for permitting us to get this done, as well as to Rebel Combs for taking care of the mowing 🙏

Update on our little rescue - Apollo James
He was taken straight to the West Liberty Vet Clinic and diagnosed as malnourished, dehydrated and of course wormy. Everything we knew and expected. He has been dewormed, given fluids and plenty of hay! They just started him on a bit of mare and foal feed. Overall a good prognosis and we are so glad we were able to pick him up before winter! Picture in the comment section.

Operation Rescue Apollo James was a success!!! ♥️

Thanks to everyone who saw our previous post on the foal that was not thriving and called attention to his condition to authorities. Permission was given to take him off the mountain to get the life-saving care he needs! Thank you Breathitt County Judge Noble!

We were asked to assist with catching, and transporting him to the veterinary clinic, and of course our answer was YES!

After a few hours of playing hide and seek, we found his herd. Corral was set up, horses were sorted out and little Apollo was loaded. Off to the clinic, and ready to start the best days of the rest of his life! We are sure his family will provide many updates along his recovery!

How did you spend this beautiful Tuesday?

Us…we just followed horses around, waiting on them to 💩

Well, besides that we wormed a few, fed some hay and checked on a couple of these guys that we are concerned about.

The samples we collected today will tell us whether the dewormer we administered two weeks ago has had any effect. Hopefully we will see an improvement in these specimens.
