I would like to debunk a common nutrition myth.

"Bran mash is a good thing to feed horses in the winter as a laxative and to keep them warm"

It is NOT ideal to feed bran mash in the winter or in general. Adding anything abruptly to a horse's diet causes a shift in the intestinal microbiome (gut bacteria/environment) and can cause many undesirable symptoms ( including; colic, laminitis and even founder).

Feed more FORAGE! Forage + Fermentation = Heat

Supporting facts:

Wheat bran is a by-product of processing cereal grains. It has moderate crude protein but is low in lysine and higher in fat 18% and may go rancid with prolonged storage.

Bran is high in phosphorus and low in calcium and can throw off the diets Ca-p ratio easily.

Wheat bran is relatively high in fiber, this adds to binding of the stool, the opposite effect of a laxative.

It is fairly high in starch, adding large amounts of starch to the diet abruptly causes intense GI upset.
The “heat increment” of bran mash is much lower (like all cereal grains) than forages.
