We are pretty passionate about continuing education so we’re thrilled when Dr. Weber hosted an impromptu TED talk about Cushings and Addisons disease!

Did you know:

🏥 Cushings disease is an elevation in cortisol while Addisons patients adrenal glands aren’t working properly so they are unable to produce cortisol.

🏥 If you are working with your Veterinarian on behavior concerns, they may recommend checking cortisol levels. If they are unable to produce cortisol, they are unable to handle or cope with stressors.

🏥 The common tests for these diseases are called a Low Dose Dex Suppression test (LDDST) and/or an ACTH Stim.

An easy way to remember: Cushing disease is a crushing amount of cortisol, while with Addisons, we need to add cortisol. Contact your Vet if you have any concerns or questions regarding these two diseases.

🚨🚨We’re expanding!!!🚨🚨

We are incredibly grateful for your continued support - it’s because of you and your companion animals that we’re able to grow and bring exceptional veterinary care to even more communities.

We are thrilled to announce that we’ll be opening a new location in Elmhurst in late Spring 2025! This expansion allows us to continue providing Fear Free AAHA-accredited care, ensuring companion animals in additional communities receive the highest level of medical attention in a stress-free environment.

Dr. Weber will be leading the Elmhurst team as Medical Director, with Dr. O’Reilly heading over as well. We couldn’t be more excited for them to bring their expertise and compassionate care to new and existing clients.

Stay tuned for open house details - we can’t wait to celebrate with you and introduce you to our new space!

Thank you for being a part of our journey. We look forward to seeing you in Elmhurst soon!

Valentine’s Day brings sweet treats and beautiful flowers, but some can be dangerous for your furry friends!

🍫 If your dog ingests even a small amount of chocolate, it can cause vomiting, increased heart rate, tremors, or even seizures. Remember!! The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is!

💐 Many popular flowers, like lilies, are highly toxic to cats. Ingesting pollen or other parts of plants can cause a variety of issues that may affect internal organs.

Keep sweets and bouquets out of reach, and if your companion animal gets into something they shouldn’t, contact your vet immediately! 🐾❤️

Got a teething puppy?

Those tiny shark teeth can be a challenge! 🦷🐶 Help soothe sore gums (and save your furniture!) with these tips:

🦴 Provide safe chew toys to redirect biting.

🐶 Ensure their needs are being met.

❄️ Try fresh or frozen carrots for cooling relief.

⏳ Be patient! Teething usually lasts until about 6 months old.

You know what gives us the ick?

🙅🏻‍♀️when reviewing medical records and there’s a note that says, “patient required multiple team members to hold down.”

🙅🏽 when new clients share with us their dog or cat were always fine at the vet until one day when they were taken “in back” and were forcefully held down for treatment. Now their companion animal is petrified to walk in the building.

💁🏻‍♀️ when an animal displays fearful behaviors in a clinic setting and is labeled as aggressive.

🙅🏽 when animals are pushed past their threshold just for the sake of “getting it done.”

You know what doesn’t give us the ick?

💃🏻 when we see patient preferences listed in their medical records. For example, “less is more with Red Dog” or “nervous around the scale, use a blanket.”

🕺when clients walk in and say, “have you ever seen a dog so happy to be at the vet?! This is their favorite place!”

💃🏻when an animals specific behaviors are noted such as, “fearful with new people” or “sensitive with ears being examined.”

🕺when a team is encouraged to be creative with their space to reach their treatment goal(s).

This is a perfect example of a fear free blood draw! Achilles got to watch his stories and was happy as a clam. No forceful restraint required.✨💟✨

Did you know more companion animals go missing around the 4th of July than any other time of the year? Here are some tips to help you and your furry friends prepare!

1. After dark, keep pets indoors to avoid loud noises. Do not leave them unattended outdoors and leave them at home during any fun festivities.

2. Ensure your companion animal has a well fitted collar, harness and up to date ID tags/microchip information.

3. Create a safe, quiet space for them; utilizing calming pheromone spray/diffusers and white noise machines.

4. Contact your veterinarian for medication(s) that will set your companion animal up for success!

Tune into WGN News at 1:00pm tomorrow for more tips from Dr. Baker! 🐾 🎇
