Teaching your dog some basic commands can be useful in many situations. At the end of our walk (with a loose leash), I use a variety of commands (in German) to complete the 2-mile task back to the house: left, hold up, down, wait, this way, here/come.

Have you seen Murphy the Boston Terrier? He is lost and was last seen near Pitts Road and Old Dayton Pike. He is not wearing a collar but is chipped. Please contact me if you know his whereabouts. Thank you.

Exposing your dog to as many sights, sounds, smells, textures, and distractions is important. Nixie the Therapy-Dog-In-Training gets a low-level exposure to a walker, something she may encounter on a hospital or nursing home visit.

Social media is the absolute worst place to attempt having a reasonable discussion about dog training topics (or any topic) where there might be disagreement. In Part 1, I discuss the use of the terms, "pain, fear, and intimidation" in a specific context and how they have been used to advance an agenda.

BEWARE OF "PAIN, FEAR, AND INTIMIDATION" STATEMENTS.

Be a responsible dog owner. If you have your dog off-leash in an area not designated as such, here is the off-leash etiquette:

1) Train your dog to listen to you in those environments with distractions such as people and other dogs. If they don't listen or are "pretty good," keep them on a leash.

2) Be courteous to others, with or without dogs. Not all people like dogs, and some dogs don't like other dogs. This can be a very bad situation if a loose dog runs up to another, not so friendly dog.

3) My dogs are not on walks to greet you, greet your dog(s), or play with your dog(s). They are out to get exercise and engage with me. It is disrespectful for you to let your dog do otherwise, and to assume it is or should be OK with me.

That is all.
