Today is so we're featuring some of our available cat-tolerant hounds!

Do you have cat-friendly hounds? Post your photos in the comments! 📸

While we sometimes use the term "cat-safe" interchangeably, "cat-tolerant" is really more accurate. A dog who cuddles with his cat sibling indoors may not recognize that same cat as a friend when outdoors in the "wild" of your backyard. And, there's no guarantee that any particular dog will like any particular cat - you probably don't like every person you meet, either! 😉

That's why introductions are so important. Here are some tips for introducing your newly adopted dog to their feline siblings:

💜 Go slowly at first! Wait until first-day excitement has settled and the environment is calm to do introductions.

💚 Muzzle and leash your dog so you can quickly intervene if needed. Keep using the muzzle until you feel comfortable. It will not hurt your dog to leave it on.

🧡 If your cat will tolerate a cat carrier, use one for initial introductions to keep them from darting away. Give your pets time to sniff each other out.

💛 Make sure kitties always have an escape route available (like a cat door or baby gate to a safe "cats-only" room) if they feel threatened.

🩷 When leaving pets home alone initially, separate them (or use your hound's muzzle) until you feel comfortable.

💙 Is it necessary to take so many precautions when a dog has already tested cat-tolerant? Probably not, in most cases -- but it's always better to go slowly and safely than take a risk! Your cat will thank you!

Once everyone has become friends, don't forget to send us photos! We love to see adopted hounds cuddling with their new cat siblings! 🐾💕

Do you have room to foster one of the beautiful greyhound boys we've featured over the last few days? We are still short three foster families for Thursday's arrivals.

Did you know: Fostering does not require owning a house or having a fence. Many of our foster families live in apartments or condos, or do not have a fenced yard! Some have had dozens of dogs come through their homes, and others are new to fostering. No matter your experience level, we will help you through the process if you are willing to give one of these wonderful dogs an opportunity!

You've already met Bud, Robin, Spinner, MonBeg, and Seb - so last but not least, meet Elf! This handsome hound turned five on June 25, and weighs about 70 pounds. Romford volunteers describe him as "adorable, cheeky, and loveable" as well as "intelligent, funny, and nuts in the best of ways" - so exactly what you'd expect from a friendly, happy greyhound!

Elf has spent time in a home so can do stairs and isn't phased by household noises. He loves attention, puppacinos, toys, and sausages. While he does okay with other greyhounds, he is not an ideal dog for those with other breeds, especially small dogs (or cats). He can be barky when meeting other dogs, and would be a great fit for a one-dog home where he can monopolize your attention and steal every ounce of love you're willing to give him!

If you'd like to pre-adopt any of these amazing greyhounds, or if you are willing to foster, please contact Erin Floyd or complete an application on our website!

Happy Monday, everyone! It's especially happy for the lucky galgos who arrived Saturday and are settling in to their new homes. We'll be seeing more of them later this week, but first, we'd like to introduce two more of the UK racers arriving on Thursday: Seb and MonBeg!

Seb adores cuddles and kisses, and thrives under affection. He would be an ideal family pet, although he has not been cat or small dog tested yet. HRH Romford Retired Greyhounds volunteers describe sweet Seb as "a loveable bundle of joy". Seb is three years old (his birthday is just around the corner, on December 16!) and is around 70 lbs. He is very friendly and confident, and will settle down and walk well once his initial burst of excitement fades!

MonBeg is a handsome four-year-old hound, and volunteers say he is a "happy chap" who loves to play and "enjoys nothing more than a cuddle". He has a calm nature and settles in fairly quickly in new environments, so they believe he'll handle the transition from racer to pet quite easily! MonBeg is 78 pounds, and whas not yet been cat or small-dog tested.

If you are looking for a lovely, laid-back boy to join your family, one of these sweet boys would be a great fit for you!

They’re on their way! Erin, Lauren, and 10 lucky galgos are headed to O’Hare this afternoon. After a long flight, each of these gorgeous hounds will be headed to their fosters’ or adopters’ homes to rest, recover, and begin their new lives.

Thank you to Erin and Lauren for making a whirlwind trip to Spain; to Daphne Legacy Tour for making that travel possible; and of course, to SOS GALGOS (oficial) and Protectora y Santuario Scooby for rescuing these sweet dogs. And especially thank you to our fosters, adopters, supporters, and volunteers, who are the reason these amazing dogs are now headed home! 💕🐾

The plight of the Spanish galgos is heartbreaking. Hunting season begins each October, and every year, hundreds of thousands of these beautiful hounds are abandoned, abused, and even killed. The galgos are exempt from Spanish animal welfare laws, and so they face unimaginable cruelty with no consequences to the perpetrators.

And yet, they hold onto hope. They maintain their sweet, gentle dispositions while surviving the worst conditions. The lucky dogs are rescued by groups like our shelter partners in Spain, SOS GALGOS (oficial) and Protectora y Santuario Scooby

We so fortunate to work alongside Daphne Legacy Tour and our friends in Spain to help find loving homes in the US for these amazing, resilient hounds.

Tomorrow, ten more galgos will be arriving at O’Hare, including five who are off to Michigan and five who will join American Greyhound. We are SO grateful for our foster families, adopters, and supporters!

It is thanks to your efforts that these ten lucky hounds get a second chance and will learn what it is like to experience comfy couches, soft beds, and full bellies. We are so happy to welcome them to the sweet life! 🐾

Please meet our Fall 2025 arrivals!
💜 Pupa, a three-year-old female
💙 Palomo, a six-year-old male
💚 Ghost, a three-year-old male
💛 Javier, a one-year-old male
🩷 Rhianna, an eight-year-old female

Rhianna is adoption-pending, but Palomo, Javier, and siblings Pupa and Ghost are all available! (And don't forget about our other available Galgos currently in foster homes -- Andy, Hermes, Ray, and Hueso would love to meet you as well!)

It’s a busy week here at American Greyhound! Erin and Lauren are hard at work in Spain, prepping to bring back several lucky Spanish galgos this Saturday. Then, six new UK greyhounds will arrive next Thursday! (We can still use a couple more foster homes, if anyone Is able!)

Today, let's meet two more of the UK dogs arriving on October 30: Robin and Bud!

Bud is a gorgeous blue-black hound and is 3 1/2 years old. His racing name was "Insane Bud", but his personality is quite the opposite! Volunteers tell us Bud is a "gentleman" who is "well loved" at the kennel for his calm, gentle demeanor. He is friendly and well-mannered, and should do well with small dogs (although he has not yet been cat-tested). Our friends at Romford Retired Greyhounds say Bud would be happy in a family home, and he is laid-back and content.

Robin is also 3 1/2, and one fun fact about him is that he has a New Year's Day birthday! He would love to celebrate with you on January 1. Kennel volunteers describe Robin as a "friendly chap" who loves to play. He walks calmly on the leash and is another kennel favorite because of his sweet and gentle demeanor. They say he will make a lovely addition to someone’s family! Robin has not been cat or small dog tested yet.

We've got news! In addition to the lucky Galgos arriving from Spain on Saturday, there are six more retired UK greyhounds packing their bags and heading our way on October 30! If you're interested in pre-adopting any of these gorgeous boys, please let us know. We also need a few additional foster homes, (especially those without kitties, since these hounds have not yet been cat-tested)!

We'll be posting all of our adoptable dogs over the next several days, so please like and share these cute faces! (Or tag a friend who could use another hound or two! 😉 )

Today, let's meet Spinner! This sweet boy is 3 1/2 years old and is a kennel “favourite” at HRH Romford Retired Greyhounds. Volunteers say he enjoys his cuddles, walks well on the leash, and will make a great addition to any family. He has a calm nature, and while he weighs in at 77 pounds, he's a very sweet and gentle hound. We are sure that Spinner's future adopters will fall in love with him, especially with that adorable snoot!

Misty is a sweet galga who came to American Greyhound from GALGOS (oficial), where she had been surrendered by her galguero after she was no longer needed for hunting. Luckily, that is not where Misty's story ended -- instead, it was where her happy-ever-after began!

After coming to the US, Misty found the perfect home. She just celebrated her 9th birthday on September 1, and Adopter Cathy was kind enough to share an update with us. We couldn't be happier for this lovely galga and her family:

"Misty adopted me in late 2023. She was 7 years old, 49 pounds, skittish around everyone, and quiet. Now she is 9 years old, 54 pounds, still shy but will let people pet her if they are patient, and barks to let me know when someone is coming to my door. Once in awhile I hear her playing with her big caterpillar toy, but if I look, she stops, lol. She rarely leaves my side willingly, and she will stare at me for hours with those big brown eyes. 🥰 "

There is something special about watching a galgo come out of their shell over time, and we are so glad Misty has a wonderful home where she feels safe enough to be herself! 💕🐾

💕🐾 Happy Tails 💕🐾

"Hi, my name is Cariñosa, and I'm stopping by to tell you how amazing life has been since we last met! I was adopted by my family in May 2024. I love playing with my toys, giving major side eye, going for walks, demanding pets from my parents and most importantly, laying on any bed or couch I can find! (I’m also really afraid of ceiling fans and have to check every room I’m in to make sure it doesn’t have one! They're scary!) I’m a super silly and sweet girl and my parents often remind me that they don’t know what they’d do without me."

Thank you to beautiful Cariñosa and her family for sharing this adorable update! What a gorgeous, happy smile now that she's found her perfect family!
