Today is so we're featuring some of our available cat-tolerant hounds!
Do you have cat-friendly hounds? Post your photos in the comments! 📸
While we sometimes use the term "cat-safe" interchangeably, "cat-tolerant" is really more accurate. A dog who cuddles with his cat sibling indoors may not recognize that same cat as a friend when outdoors in the "wild" of your backyard. And, there's no guarantee that any particular dog will like any particular cat - you probably don't like every person you meet, either! 😉
That's why introductions are so important. Here are some tips for introducing your newly adopted dog to their feline siblings:
💜 Go slowly at first! Wait until first-day excitement has settled and the environment is calm to do introductions.
💚 Muzzle and leash your dog so you can quickly intervene if needed. Keep using the muzzle until you feel comfortable. It will not hurt your dog to leave it on.
🧡 If your cat will tolerate a cat carrier, use one for initial introductions to keep them from darting away. Give your pets time to sniff each other out.
💛 Make sure kitties always have an escape route available (like a cat door or baby gate to a safe "cats-only" room) if they feel threatened.
🩷 When leaving pets home alone initially, separate them (or use your hound's muzzle) until you feel comfortable.
💙 Is it necessary to take so many precautions when a dog has already tested cat-tolerant? Probably not, in most cases -- but it's always better to go slowly and safely than take a risk! Your cat will thank you!
Once everyone has become friends, don't forget to send us photos! We love to see adopted hounds cuddling with their new cat siblings! 🐾💕
