ATTENTION Pet Parents!

A chemical used in Milk-Bones, Ol’Roy, Kibbles’n Bits, Hill’s Pet Food and other pet foods should no longer be considered safe for consumption due to concerns about its ability to damage DNA according to a new animal-model study.

According to the Environmental Working Group: “A scientific panel created by the European Food Safety Authority found that titanium dioxide “can no longer be considered as safe when used as a food additive.” The panel, citing concerns about titanium dioxide’s genotoxicity, or its ability to damage DNA, based its conclusion on a review of hundreds of scientific studies. EWG called on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to quickly consider whether to ban titanium dioxide from use in food."

A chemical that may damage our pet's DNA should not be fed to pets.

Here are some fun facts about rats and why they make great pets!

1) Rats are medium-sized rodents with a long tail. A group of rats is called a ‘mischief’!

2) Rats’ super-strong teeth never stop growing! They have to keep nibbling to wear them down – or eating would become impossible!

3) Their whiskers are more sensitive than human fingertips! Rats brush the long hairs against objects or the floor, helping them build up a detailed picture of their environment.

4) With eyes on either side of their head that can move in opposite directions, rats are even able to see what’s happening above them.

5) Rats can hear well, including sounds that are too high-pitched for humans to hear. They may also ‘smile’ with their ears! When they’re happy their ears relax, become droopy and slightly pinker. Aww!

6) They wash by constantly licking their fur – sometimes they’ll even ‘comb’ it into place with their teeth. Yes, rats are squeak-y clean!

7) Rats’ long tails are used for balance and to keep themselves cool – they can direct some of their body heat out through them! They’re also great swimmers, able to hold their breath for several minutes.

For those of you who shopped our store, you probably had the pleasure of meeting our store cat Felix. He loved attention and rubbing against legs! He was such a sweet boy and loved to be held. Felix passed away this morning around 8am.

When we moved our store to the Tanner Road location, we had no intentions of having a in-store pet other than our pet rat. But then Felix started showing up and we were afraid he would get hurt on the busy road. So we started feeding him and got him dewormed. Thus, he became our store cat!

Once we closed the business, he came home with us and lived his best life. We, and many others, loved Felix and we will all miss him dearly.

We are very sad to say that both our girls have now passed. We lost Amaryllis today. We will miss her, but we are thankful she’s not sick anymore.

We are very sad to hear that one of our previous employees has passed. She was never just an employee. She was a friend from the very start. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.
She had such a beautiful and caring soul!
