As we bask in the peak of summer, you might have heard the term "dog days of summer" and wondered what it means.

The "dog days of summer" refers to the hottest, most sweltering days of the year. This period traditionally runs from early July to mid-August. But why "dog days"?

The phrase traces back to ancient Greece and Rome. Itโ€™s connected to the star Sirius, known as the Dog Star, which is part of the constellation Canis Major (Latin for "Greater Dog"). In ancient times, people believed that the heat of summer was due to the combined heat of the sun and Sirius, which rises and sets with the sun during this period.

While we now know the heat of summer is due to the Earth's tilt and not the stars, the term "dog days" has stuck around. It captures that feeling of lazy, hot days when both humans and pets seek out the coolest spots to lounge.

Remember, during these dog days:

Keep your pets hydrated and never leave them in hot cars.
Enjoy some splash time in a pool or with a hose.
Find a shady spot and take it easy, just like our canine friends.
Stay cool and enjoy the rest of your summer! ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒด

Feel free to share your own tips for staying cool or photos of your pets enjoying the summer in the comments below! ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŒŠ

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿพ National Pet Fire Safety Day: Essential Tips to Prevent Fires and Keep Your Pets Safe ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿšจ

Extinguish Open Flames: Pets are naturally curious and may investigate cooking appliances, candles, or fireplaces. Always ensure flames are completely out before leaving your home, and never leave pets unattended around an open flame.

Remove Stove K***s: Protect stove k***s with covers or remove them entirely before leaving the house. Stoves are the top cause of pet-started fires.

Invest in Flameless Candles: Replace traditional candles with flameless ones that use light bulbs. This eliminates the risk of pets, especially cats, knocking over candles and starting a fire.

Secure Young Pets: Keep young pets, like puppies, in secure areas such as crates or behind baby gates when you're not home to prevent them from accessing fire-starting hazards.

Place Pets Near Exits: When pets are home alone, keep them in areas close to entrances where firefighters can easily find them. Always keep collars on pets and have leashes readily available for quick evacuations.

Use Monitored Smoke Detectors: Install smoke detectors connected to a monitoring center for an extra layer of protection, especially when pets are alone at home.

Pet Alert Window Cling: Display a window cling on a front window indicating the number of pets inside. This helps rescuers save valuable time in locating your pets. Free window clings are available at our hospital. Stop by and pick one up today.

Update Pet Information: Regularly update the number of pets on your pet alert window cling to ensure rescuers know exactly how many pets to look for.

By following these tips, you can help prevent fires and keep your beloved pets safe!

๐Ÿ  Secure your home: Check fences, close windows, and keep doors shut tight to prevent escapes.

๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ Leash up: Always leash your dog during walks and keep cats indoors to minimize the risk of them wandering off.

๐Ÿ“ธ Get your petโ€™s picture taken: Keep current photos of your pets from various angles. This will be invaluable if you need to create a lost pet flyer.

With grilling season in full swing, here's a refresher on common cookout foods you should NEVER feed pets! While most pet owners know that certain foods like chocolate, onions and garlic and grapes pose serious health risks for dogs and cats, visiting friends, family and children may not. Itโ€™s a smart idea to remind your guests to NOT feed your pet table foods - especially if they are expert beggars.

๐Ÿฅ If you suspect your pet may have eaten something they shouldnโ€™t have, go directly to the closest emergency vet if your veterinarian is not available. Be sure to bring the item ingested, if possible, to help them diagnose and treat your pet.

๐ŸŽ† How to Calm Pets During Fireworks ๐ŸŽ†

Cats and dogs have a much higher sense of hearing than us humans do. While we may enjoy fireworks as musical pops, our pets experience them with much higher intensity. The loud booms and unpredictable nature of fireworks can cause a lot of confusion and stress for our pets, triggering their fight-or-flight response to unknown threats.

To help your pets stay calm and safe during fireworks, follow these tips from our guide:

Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet, comfortable area for your pet to retreat to.
Use Calming Aids: Consider pet-safe calming products like pheromone diffusers or anxiety wraps.
Stay Close: Offer comfort and reassurance by staying with your pet during the fireworks.
Distraction: Play soothing music or white noise to help drown out the sound of fireworks.
Exercise: Tire your pet out with a long walk or play session earlier in the day.

Let's make this fireworks season a safe and calm one for our beloved pets! ๐Ÿพโค๏ธ

With temperatures on the rise, it's important to keep an eye on our pets, as cats and dogs are highly susceptible to heat-related emergencies. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Some warning signs to watch for:
๐Ÿ”ฅ excessive panting
๐Ÿ”ฅ collapsing or inability to get up
๐Ÿ”ฅ vomiting after drinking
๐Ÿ”ฅ dark red gums
๐Ÿ”ฅ sudden lethargy

In addition to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, be aware of the dangers of burned paw pads from walking on hot pavement or venturing onto rough trails without prior conditioning. These injuries may result in weeks of bandaging, pain management, and potential permanent scars. If your pet has burned paw pads or is showing any symptoms of or , seek urgent care ASAP.

If you have a dog, you should know about foxtails (aka โ€œgrass awnsโ€). In the spring and summer, they thrive in fields and along roadsides and hiking trails across much of the US. Foxtails can lodge into your dogโ€™s ears, paws, and noseโ€”causing discomfort and leading to infections if they arenโ€™t removed. Learning to spot these spiky grasses and how to check your dog from nose to tail can go far in preventing injuries. If you find a foxtail and canโ€™t remove it, take your pet to the closest urgent or emergency care vet for removal and follow-up care.

A choking dog is a scary situation. Dogs are typically able to cough up bits of food or foreign material lodged in the throat, but it is possible for a dog to choke on an object or food. Understanding how to check for obstructions and perform the canine Heimlich maneuver can save your dog's life. For a more thorough overview, ask your vet for a demonstration at your pet's next visit.
