Matthias' Story
Our Hearts Are Broken...💔
Matthias was a beautiful Belgian Draft that came to Horse Plus through the April Buy Out. He was estimated to be around 8 to10 years-old and 19 hands tall. Matthias was noticeably underweight and had a wound on his left front leg that, luckily, was not infected. Radiographs also revealed that there were no significant bony changes, so our veterinarians performed a debridement surgery to allow healthy tissue to grow back. After his surgery, Matthias' leg began to slowly heal, but our veterinarians noticed he was beginning to show signs of facial paralysis, as his lip began drooping and deviating to the right. He also began crossing over (incoordination) his back legs when walking. They were concerned that Matthias could have EPM, or Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis. This is a neurological disease that horses get from ingesting parasite eggs called sporocysts, from Opossum feces. Horses don't necessarily eat the feces, but the sporocysts will crawl to other places, especially in grass. Unfortunately, after running a test, our veterinarians confirmed Matthias had EPM. Although there are medications that can help treat this disease, the symptoms can rapidly progress and cause permanent neurological deficits. In Matthias' case, he became unable to control his lips and was losing the ability to grab food. Therefore, he couldn't eat appropriately and began losing weight. The EPM symptoms had progressed so fast, that the treatments available would not be able to repair the paralysis already happening. There was nothing our veterinarians could do to increase Matthias' quality of life, therefore, he was given the Last Act of Kindness.

Pooh was intercepted from being sold at the auction and entering the slaughter pipeline during our April Buy-Out program. He had some large masses located along his neck and throat area, so Dr. Lydia and Dr. Gina worked together to remove them all.

Horse Shelter Heroes S5E21 - Monday Kitten Trouble!
Kitten chaos! Horse hijinks! It's another wild week on Horse Shelter Heroes!
24 adorable kittens need rescuing from a cat-tastic hoarding situation. Meanwhile, the Buy-Out program gets postponed as the Horse Rescue Heroes Workshop takes priority. With some of the staff on vacation, it's all hands on deck (and paws!) as we juggle construction, cat chasing, and a majestic horse surrender. This episode is overflowing with laughter, heartwarming moments, and the never-ending surprises of shelter life. Don't miss a minute of Horse Shelter Heroes!
We are live this evening at the Spring Jubilee at Maury County Park, in Columbia Tennessee, where Big Lick horses are shown in stacks and chains. This abuse must be absolutely stopped, and we are very hopeful that the USDA rule will stick and next February this will all be illegal. This might be the last live we ever do at a big lick horse show.
