Movement and change in energy on the trail can be stimulating to the pack. It can excite or scare. Being aware of your surroundings is necessary in order to keep order. Setting the tone for our hike with a calm van exit. A calm exit helps set the energy, regulate the emotions, and teach impulse control. It is a daily practice that varies according to the pack, individual attitudes, weather etc. Just like us, dogs respond to stimulus within their environment. The “pause and wait” is so hard, but necessary to steer them from acting impulsively. Kind of fascinating to me to observe how a dog is feeling before we actually hit the trail. And as a result of that knowledge, be able to predict their behavior ✌🏽❤️🐾

How do we build healthy relationships on the trail? It starts with awareness. Awareness of our surroundings, and an awareness of other trail users. Looking ahead and being alert helps me keep my pack safe and helps avoid unwanted interactions with other people on the trail.
We saw this group hiking towards us today, so I called my pack off trail and put them on a wait. This is a regular practice for us. I understand not everyone likes dogs. I understand your dog might not like other dogs, especially a whole pack. I also respect my dogs and the work we do enough to leave a positive impression on those we encounter. So, when I saw this group approaching, I rallied the pups and pulled off to allow them to pass without having to interact with us. They were very gracious, and had nothing but praise for how well behaved my pack was.
I live for these positive interactions. It confirms my belief that dog walkers and other trail users can coexist. It takes being proactive, awareness, respect and communication on all parties ✌🏽💗🐾
