The perfect compliment to a late summer evening, has donated their mouth-watering cider for Farm to Fork this year. Their beautiful orchard north of South Haven is well worth the drive. For over 160 years, 6 generations of the Overhiser family have been caring for the land, producing blueberries, cherries, peaches, apricots, plums, pears, pumpkins, and of course, crisp apples, available for U-Pick and in their cute farm store. Open through October and sometimes a bit beyond, stop in for a visit, and please say hi to their very vocal goats for me!

The Eighth Day Farm fam celebrates healthy land and healthy communities, and these raffle prizes do just that!

More than a gym, Valeo is a community of folks that care about you making any change that you desire to make. They meet folks where they are at, and push them to where they want to be with loads of encouragement, joy, and love. We love them because they don’t promote a diet culture that demonizes food and induces shame; they just want people to do what’s best for their bodies, and that’s a beautiful thing. Thank you, for your support and always being in our corner!

Not only is a member of the Eighth Day community, serves on our board, but she’s also a coach who’s dedicated to inspiring other women to establish nourishing rhythms in their lives. Farm to Fork is our annual fundraiser, celebrating care for land and neighbor. We believe that the most nourishing food should also be the most accessible, and the funds raised at Farm to Fork allow us to cover or supplement the cost of food donations throughout the growing season so we can give freely to our neighbors without hesitation. These veggie donations go to , St. Vincent de Paul’s emergency food pantry, and individuals and families in our community that struggle to get locally grown, fresh food on a limited budget.

We love our land, we love these people, and we love the community of supporters that make it happen. Thank you for liking, sharing, posting, and attending all things Farm to Fork and caring for our community in this way. We love you all!

There are still tickets available for Farm to Fork—you can find them as well as tickets for the raffle through the link in our bio.

We’ve got big love for local biz, and so many business owners in Holland pour on the love for Farm to Fork. Our raffle is stacked again this year! We’ll be highlighting them as the event draws near, and the following have been our ride-or-dies for years now.

LJ’s holds a special place in our hearts, providing space for people from all walks of life to find really great coffee and a place to call home in Holland. We love you, !

Another third space near and dear to us is . They donate memberships to our intern crew each year, and Josh spends a morning with our crew every season to teach them about caring for their body and minds as they work in the field, using climbing as a tool to demonstrate this care and mindfulness. They are a gift to this community, providing opportunity for people to challenge themselves in an encouraging and welcoming space. We’re so grateful for them! They’ve donated a climbing experience for 6 folks for the raffle—thank you, Scrapyard!

08/12/2024

And just like that, our intern crew has wrapped up their time with us for the 2024 season. I said it all season long, but their time with us flew by. And yet, as I scrolled back to May in my camera roll, I was reminded of all that has been accomplished during our season with them. One of the main reasons we love this program is because it brings refreshing, new perspective to the farm. This season was no exception, and we’re more efficient, diligent, and intentional as a result of working with this impressive crew.

Ashley, Ayanna, Jeannée, and Megan—thank you for pouring your minds and bodies into our small farm this season. We are forever changed for the better because of the work you’ve accomplished here. We’re going to miss you big time. If you see an intern around, give them some love and thanks! They grew and distributed thousands of pounds of food for this community. What a gift! 🌼🥹💚

Special thanks to , .city.neighbors.farm, , , , and for rounding out this internship experience by sharing your space, wisdom, and work with us.

And because Mary Oliver often has the words when we don’t, this is our hope for this crew as they venture on from the farm.

Wild Geese, by Mary Oliver

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting–
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

Farm to Fork is happening on Saturday, September 21 from 5-9 PM! Come for wood-fired pizza and salad topped and loaded with Eighth Day produce, local beer, cider, wine, dessert, live music, and a jam-packed raffle stocked with all good things from the best local biz in town.

As the growing season slows down, funds raised at Farm to Fork give us a boost for the end of the year to continue to donate fresh food (not only leftovers or market overages) to local partners addressing food insecurity.

We’ll be hosted by the Kroll family of Zeeland once again, who are generously donating their years of pizza expertise and stunning yard as a backdrop to Farm to Fork. This event is adults (18+) only, so be sure to book a babysitter.

The party is open house style and runs from 5-9, and each ticket will include a hearty all-you-can-eat dinner, dessert, and 2 drink tickets. Gluten-Free, Vegan, and Vegetarian options will be available.

The event sells out every year! You can get your event and raffle tickets through the link in our bio.

Grateful to grow for Community Action House 🥰

This summer our Food Club plays a crucial role in ensuring families maintain access to the nutritious foods they need as rising temperatures, and school vacations come full swing. By providing a dignified, grocery store-like experience, we help our neighbors maintain their health and well-being during this busy season.

We would love to give our partners at Eighth Day Farm a shoutout for helping us keep our shelves stocked with beautiful, local produce this summer season. Your support ensures that families receive fresh, healthy foods they may not access otherwise. Thank you Eighth Day Farm!

The intern crew took a trip to last week. What a treat and inspiration to be given a tour of the farm by the owner, Heather. Green Wagon has been a guiding light for Eighth Day; they have grown rapidly, improving systems and graciously teaching us as they learn and adapt. The interns got to experience the magic of growing ginger in Michigan, the innovations and boost in abundance that comes with growing in hoop houses, their no-till system, and a bountiful and delicious lunch with their crew. Thank you, for your generosity, wisdom, and encouragement. Holland folks, you can find their veggies at Harvest Health in Holland and on Saturdays. GR friends, they’re , smaller groceries throughout GR, and they also have an on-farm store that’s stocked daily. Give them some love!

06/12/2024

Our intern crew spends the majority of their Thursday mornings off-site visiting other farms and community hubs in the West Michigan area. Farmer’s rely heavily on one another: sharing tools, knowledge, wisdom, woes, and wins. We want our interns to leave this experience with the understanding that farming is much harder to do on your own, and that establishing a network of support around you to do this work is going to make it much more sustainable, and a lot less overwhelming and lonely.

Our morning (Belding, MI) was magical, as always. Mik and Brian and their wonderful crew welcomed us into planting the last of their onions, followed by a dreamy potluck lunch. Stillwind is in year 3, and the intention, heart, and love they put into their work is inspiring and so vital for new Farmer’s to witness. They are so impressive—if you’re in the Grand Rapids area, check them out!
city.neighbors.farm is a fellow non-profit farm in Grand Rapids—an inspiration to us! Lance spent the morning giving us a tour of their space (major farm envy of their pizza oven and covered wash-pack), leaving the rest of the morning for pruning and trellising tomatoes. Farming can take all shapes and forms, and it’s to get caught in the weeds (quite literally). Visiting these other farms helps us get our heads out of the sand and see other ways the work can be done. So grateful to New City Neighbors and Stillwind for taking time out of their busy, busy season to walk alongside our crew 💚🌞

If you’re in Grand Rapids, New City sells at the new Creston Farmer’s Market and you can catch Stillwind . Support your neighborhood farmer!

With a lull in markets between the end of spring and start of summer, we’ll be hosting another pop-up market and fundraiser with Windflower Design Co. on Saturday, May 11 from 9 AM-12 PM at our Growth Center, 709 Pine Ave., Holland, MI 49423. We’ll have arugula, spinach, micro greens, green onions/garlic, and plant starts for sale in addition to some other spring goodies to celebrate the vibrance and love of our Mother Earth and earthly mothers.

will be curating homegrown bouquets of spring blooms, a soft palette with pops of color. They plan to have local tulips, iris, lilac, stock, ranunculus, hellebores, bleeding heart and whatever other fun surprises the garden gives them next week. They are also bringing in a limited number of roses and a few other favorites.

While we’ll have a few bouquets and floral designs available for walk-up customers, we highly encourage you to pre-order your flowers through the link in our bio. Like last time, 25% of flower sales are going directly toward Eighth Day vegetable donations to the  Food Club and Community Kitchen, as well as St. Vincent de Paul Center’s Emergency Food Pantry. We desire to create a closed loop where costs are covered, veggies are sold, and our neighbors are taken care of. Cheers to investing in a local, bountiful economy!

Did you know that you can pay for your CSA with SNAP/EBT benefits? SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) provides food benefits to families with a low-income to supplement their grocery budget. We’ve partnered with the Michigan Fitness Foundation to cover 75% of the cost of the CSA for folks with SNAP benefits. This means that SNAP participants pay $5.96 per week with their SNAP benefits, with no up-front investment required. If you don’t have SNAP but know of someone who does that would be interested in this program, please share this info with them!

Don’t have SNAP but still face barriers to purchasing a CSA? We fundraise throughout the year to help cover or supplement the cost of a CSA for folks who need assistance. DM us or email Andy at [email protected] for more info.

To sign up for a CSA for SNAP, visit the link in our bio. Cheers to veggies all summer long!

This is our last market at until April 6! We’ll have arugula (!!!), spinach, carrots, and micro greens for sale. The arugula is our first cut of the spring—not having to withstand the summer heat, these leaves are tender, and have a more mild-peppery flavor than our summer arugula. The best of the best for the season!

For those of you that can’t wait until April 6 for more spring greens, we’re hosting a pop-up market and tulip fundraiser with next Saturday to tide you over. You can pre-order your tulips through the link in our bio 🌷 💚 See the event details below:
