We can laugh at bad internet veterinary advice but the problem is real and I’ve found that clients don’t respond well to just being told it’s bad advice. Here is a graphic you can share on your clinic social media to help explain WHY sometimes internet advice can be harmful.

‼️This is your reminder to make sure your dogs are up to date on their rattlesnake vaccine‼️

Late last night I noticed that my dog Tucker had been bitten by a rattlesnake and his right eye was almost swollen shut. His face was pretty swollen. We had a lot going on last night (health issues, sickness, farm pickup broke down in the road etc) and he seemed stable so I thought I would re-evaluate him in the morning.

This is Tucker at noon today, can barely tell he was bitten. Acts like nothing happened, you can see the fang marks on the right side of his nose
I’m glad he’s doing well and I’m going to keep an eye on him

Of course, even if your pet has been vaccinated it’s always good to call us and we are happy to answer any questions. Some patients will still need additional care and testing

Some symptoms to watch for are continued swelling, lethargy (not very active), inappetence (not wanting to eat), or continuing to bleed from the bite site
Watch your step everyone 🐍

We just tested this pond and found blue-green algae, Microcystis and Oscillatoria spp. These produce toxins that target the nervous system and liver and can result in sudden death in most any animal - including livestock and dogs that swim.
Not all algae is toxic - we had this identified at the lab. The cattle are being moved off this pasture now. BG algae blooms occur when it’s warm and there’s standing water that has high nitrogen and phosphorus, usually from runoff from fertilized pastures. Keep an eye out and get the water tested!
