Welcome to our another Wednesday Word, where we bring you interesting cat-related words that you may never have heard before! Today’s special word is “agouti”, which refers to the pattern of color in a cat’s coat where each hair can alternate between light and dark bands. You often see this in tabby cats, but this is separate from your typical tabby striping: each individual hair actually has different bands of colors! If you look close to the skin, you can usually see the different color bands in the hairs, but from a distance it gives the cat more of a “speckled” or “silky” or “salt and pepper” appearance, which can help camouflage the cat in wild settings. The gene and the resulting banded colors on hairs is also found in dogs and rodents…if you think of what a rabbit’s fur looks like, that’s classic agouti banding at work!
