Versatility. Versatility. Versatility.

I have a few stories to tell from a horse show last week…

I realized a common issue we have with our horses and ourselves. We don’t like pressure. I claim that I work best under pressure but… I don’t want to burn out… I don’t want to scratch my class… so sometimes I “wing it”.

I was the first to entered the trail obstacle class. So with a quick glance of the directions I perfectly worked the gate, noodles, tarp, backup……. And then I forgot the correct direction to pivot in the box…. I was wrong. I finished with a near perfect side pass. And I WON! Other horses had more issues than my wrong turn… my horse and I had a relaxing ride through the obstacles and that was the most important thing. If I would’ve watched everyone else’s ride… I would’ve felt pressure. Should I have known the directions better… of course! My excuse… trail and dressage were being run at the same time… if I did the trail class “now” I would do my dressage test on time… Always wanting to be efficient. I don’t like to be late. (Or under pressure)

Another story has to do with a friend. She’s been practicing the Western Riding pattern at home on her wonderfully obedient mare. She asked “should I just ride her with two hands to make this a good experience for her?“ Entering two handed would’ve disqualified her immediately. Her horse is over 5 years old and would need to be neck reined. I reminded her that we determine what is a good experience. Our actions and reactions. Our state of mind. She took a deep breath and agreed. Her mare did a wonderful job. She was so happy she entered one handed.

She placed well.

Last story….. I had to momentarily school my horse in Western Riding. And that’s ok too. Did your horse push through and miss a lead change? Mine did. So I stopped and backed up about 10’. I asked again and finished my ride with more improvements than my last show. We actually cantered over the ground pole. Something that hasn’t happened until that ride. It was a good ride even though we had an issue. I still made progress and came out of the arena PLEASED!

We all think of our horse shows as a sort of “twisted vacation” from our normal lives. So let’s enjoy ourselves. Don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself or your horse. Enjoy the journey.
