✨TheraPlate and Changes in Bone✨ TheraPlate is an increasingly common therapeutic intervention used throughout many disciplines. But what exactly does it do and when is it beneficial? “TheraPlate uses vortex wave circulation which delivers a pulsatile stimulation” via a front plate and hind plate so all 4 limbs are exposed equally.

📝A study by Greene et al. looked at bone changes in the left third metacarpal (Pic 2) in stock-type horses on stall rest for 8 weeks. The study found that there was an increase in the size of the nutrient foramen in the treatment group as compared to a decrease in size in the nontreatment group.

✨This is important because an increase in size of the nutrient foramen provides a greater passage for blood flow. Blood carries nutrients (like oxygen) to tissues, and takes waste products (like lactic acid) away from tissues which is vital to maintaining healthy muscle and bones. Therefore, the increased blood flow may enhance delivery of nutrients to the lower leg in stall rested horses.

Abstract of this article can be found at theraplate.com/research.asp.

✨TheraPlate and Muscle Thickness✨ TheraPlate is an increasingly common therapeutic intervention used throughout many disciplines. But what exactly does it do and when is it beneficial? “TheraPlate uses vortex wave circulation which delivers a pulsatile stimulation” via a front plate and hind plate so all 4 limbs are exposed equally. A study by Greene et al. looked at the changes in muscle thickness in stock-type horses on stall rest for 8 weeks. Prior to stall rest, horses were moderately exercised 1 hr/day 4 days/wk for 45 days. During stall rest, the treatment group was placed on the TheraPlate for 15 minutes 2x/day 5 days/wk at 50% intensity (~2100 rpm). Those in the non-treatment group received no therapeutic intervention. The study found an 8.9% INcrease in the longissimus thoracis (LT - picture 2), 7.7% INcrease in the longissiumus lumborum (LL - picture 2), and a whopping 30.9% INcrease in the extensor carpi radialis (ECR - picture 3) in the treatment group. This is compared to an 8.7% DEcrease in the LT, 2.7% increase in the LL, and 0% change in the ECR for the non-treatment group. While these findings were not statistically significant, TheraPlate use does appear to be a beneficial way for reducing muscle atrophy in stall rested horses, and potentially improving muscle thickness.

As a physical therapist and fellow equestrian, please consider wearing helmets!! TBI’s have a wide range of prognoses from good outcomes - death. Regardless, recovery from TBI is not an easy process and can change your life entirely.
Even if you have the best, most bombproof horse, you never know what others in the area might do that will affect you and your horse (just like driving a car). In my opinion, ALWAYS better safe than sorry.
And yes, a concussion is considered a mild TBI. The more concussions you sustain, the easier it is to get more. More concussions leads to long term brain deficits and disease.
Stepping off my safety soap box now…

✨Side-by-side Effects✨
Both of these boys had their turn with the BEMER blanket today. However, the one without would always scoot nice and close to the one that had the blanket! Even when it’s not directly on the horse, it is still having positive effects on the parasympathetic nervous system on nearby horses. When one horse begins to relax, others begin to relax. In fact, the first yawn and release came from the horse who did NOT have the blanket on!
This is just my observation…At this time, to my knowledge, there is no research available on the effects BEMER has on nearby horses, but it would make for an interesting study!

✨Client Cutie Sunday - Harley✨

Harley is a 14 year old Thoroughbred I started working with several weeks ago. My first time working with her, I noticed she was very reactive to even light touch on her neck, chest, and back. This was accompanied with raising her head and a big tail swish saying “get away from there”. Upon further assessment, I noticed she had very tight fascia (the connective tissue that connects muscle to skin) which may be the cause of her reactivity. You can tell from the second picture she gets lots of good releases throughout our sessions!
Since I have been working with her, she is already less reactive to touch in these areas and is happier to work with me each time!
She has been receiving BEMER therapy 3x/week and very light myofascial work 1x/week in preparation for deeper massage.

✨My Why✨
I started this business because I recognized a need for practitioners who are able to treat both the horse and rider together - after all, the horse and rider are a team! If the rider is off or the horse is off, it is going to affect what the other does in order to maintain balance. This is not a big deal here and there, but when there is consistency in the “off-ness” it is likely going to lead to a long-term imbalance in both team members and compensations in the body.

Equine Sports Massage and Equestrian Physical Therapy are two services I offer that can help address the “off-ness”. I do not diagnose or cure any issues with the horse or rider, but I can evaluate and determine impairments (like muscle tightness) that can be worked on. In addition, there are many other factors that can lead to “off-ness” in the horse such as saddle fit, dental problems, ulcers, etc. The services I offer can only help maintain healthy muscles, joints, and ligaments. Any other care necessary should be addressed by your veterinarian.

🙋🏼‍♀️If you are interested in learning more or wondering if I can help, please reach out! I look forward to working with you and your horse(s)!

Can you spot the changes in the nervous system indicating a more relaxed state? Horses can be very subtle communicators so it’s important to pay attention to the smallest changes in their behavior to recognize what they’re saying.

🐴 This was my first time working with this mare at Brinnwood Farm and she was a little skeptical of me at first. Her head was high, ears slightly back, and her eyes were tented indicating an excited state of her nervous system. I spent time brushing her and lightly petting her so she could get to know me before we started our BEMER session. 10 minutes into it, her behavior was completely changed!

✨BEMER doesn’t do anything magical; it makes the natural processes of the body, specifically blood flow, more efficient allowing for a more relaxed nervous system.

🙋🏼‍♀️If you want to learn more about the benefits of BEMER and it’s science or other therapeutic techniques, please follow!

Meet the horses!! As promised, here’s a little intro for my sweet boys from very tall to very small.

🐴 Venti (Photos 1 and 2) is a 17.3 hand Holsteiner who came into my life Summer of 2022. He stole my heart immediately with his kind eyes and distinguished yet goofy personality. Venti spent his life showing in the Hunter and Eq rings on the A circuit. He has a very impressive and successful show history which makes him the perfect teacher for me! The second picture is our first show together and you can tell he loves his job 🥰

🐴🐴🐴Bentley, Toby, and Java are my three littles (Photos 3 and 4 - Bentley is generally absent during picture time because he’s trying to find something yummy to eat!) Although these boys are small, they have big personalities that are all so unique. They’ve been a part of my life since they were babies (Java is 18 now!) and I can’t imagine my life without them. They’ve all shown on the AMHR circuit, but I retired from showing when I started graduate school. Lately I’ve been thinking it would be fun to do some local shows with them! Photos 5 and 6 give you an idea of what the mini show world looks like - lots of running next to them 😅

💕I’m so thankful for my 4 boys and look forward to sharing some fun pics/videos of them in the future!

Have you been wondering what the first BEMER session looks like? Look no further!

🐴This is Quinn, a 3 year old TB, at Brinnwood Farm undergoing his first BEMER session. The first session looks consistent from horse to horse while they get familiar with the equipment and the PEMF signal. I always turn on the equipment and let them sniff it prior to placing it on their body. This way they get a sense of the signal before it ever touches them. Here you can see that Quinn accepts the new blanket and cuffs right away!

⭐️After the first treatment, I vary the the placement of the cuffs and /or the PEMF signal duration and intensity levels to meet the horse’s and owner’s needs. In Quinn’s future sessions, we will focus more on his front carpal and digital tendons to help maintain healthy tissue!

Hi there! My name is Christina and I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy (for humans!). I have recently started the process of becoming a Certified Equine Rehabilitation Practitioner so I can also rehabilitate horses from injury and help maintain their condition for their discipline.

I have been around horses for the majority of my life and began taking lessons at the age of 6. My instructor also introduced my mom and me to the miniature horse world which is where I have spent most of my showing career. I have competed in in-hand halter, in-hand obstacle, in-hand hunter, and driving. Within the last two years, I began to turn my attention more to the hunter/jumper world and recently purchased my first Hunter/Eq horse. (You will meet him and my minis soon!)

I am originally from Southern California but have recently settled in Holly Springs, NC, to be closer to my family and significant other. Although I am new to the area, I already love it!

My goal in starting this business is to educate horse owners and riders on the benefits of rehabilitation, bodywork, and routine conditioning for both themselves and their horses in order to optimize how the team functions together. It is important to be able to address both the horse and rider because they operate as a team - what one does affects the other. I will talk more about this in future posts.

Please post a comment saying hello - I would love to connect with you!
