Had a great time on Day 1 of our Kansas trip. Today we introduced some young dogs to the gun & they did amazing. We got to see 2 young dogs retrieve a rabbit a little ways.
Total of 12 rabbits today & we found a decent shed. We also spent the last few hours of the day running a few young dogs for fun.

****This is a long post but if you read it I believe you’ll find it worth your while.

I get pics & videos from customers fairly often. A lot of the pics are successful hunts with a tailgate full of rabbits etc. I’m always happy to see their success but when I got this set of pics yesterday while I was out running some dogs it literally made my day!

This is Macy Mewborn from NC. She is 9 years old & started rabbit hunting last year along with her little brother. Her father, Wesley, bought some dogs from me & Macy’s love of the dogs & rabbit hunting was born.

She hunted a good bit last year & missed several times. She was getting frustrated but her dad kept encouraging her to keep on trying. Wesley takes his 2 kids more often with him than he hunts without them. Would he kill more rabbits if he left them at home? No doubt! A lot of dad’s would do just that because they can’t hunt like they want when the kids are there. Wesley never feels that way! He gladly takes his 2 favorite hunting buddies along. These kids grow up so fast & often times we miss the opportunity to make as many memories we could.

Yesterday, all of the training, patience, advice, etc paid off when their pack of hounds jumped a rabbit & were burning it up. As the rabbit was coming back with the dogs in pursuit but a safe distance away from the rabbit Macy shouldered her .410 & with one shot harvested her 1st rabbit.

She was actually crying a little because she thought she missed. Wesley went over to where the rabbit was said you got it & her tears turned into a beautiful smile!

Some would say “leave the kids at home. It’s not safe etc” but if you train them right, teach them gun safety, stay with them, & be responsible you’ll find it to be very rewarding.

I know this is the case with the Mewborn family because I had the great privilege to go on a hunt with them last season. These kids are very respectful & were never unsafe or out of control.

Macy was so fired up she told her dad she wants her rabbit mounted. Lol
I’d say the love of the sport is alive & well in this young lady.

It’s no secret that I’ve been struggling with finding as many rabbits as I’d like & the scenting conditions around here have been horrible. It’s been a grind & very disappointing but I will never give up but I needed some encouragement. Yesterday that text was like a shot of energy to my soul. I immediately called & Wesley had Macy answer the phone. I congratulated Macy on her 1st rabbit & I could hear the thrill in her voice.

Folks this is what it’s all about! This is why I do what I do! It makes every briar you pull out of your body, every late night delivery of puppies or trips to the vet late at night for a C-section, every daily chore of cleaning kennels, feeding, giving fresh water, running dogs in the cold, & all the other things we as beaglers do WORTH IT!

We have a responsibility to the next generation. I encourage each of you to spend a little time taking a kid hunting. No you won’t kill as many rabbits. No you won’t get to shoot but you will give that kid something more important & you will be blessed as well.

I saw this today on a post & just had to share. So much truth in these words that I can relate to & im sure a lot of you will also.

Time can turn a dog’s muzzle grey. It can add a little weight to his frame and maybe slow his step a little.

But it can’t take the intensity from a good hound’s eyes nor truly diminish his love for the game.

On the outside he looks a little different than the dog I was hauling 5 years ago. The inside hasn’t changed. We don’t get to hunt together as much as we used to, which is the normal way of things as he has transitioned into life as a daddy. But when we do get to go, there’s no joy more pure than hearing he and his brother’s voices pierce the silence in their familiar way. It’s a sound I’ve heard thousands of times in their lifetime but it still makes my heart leap.

We look at dogs when they’re young and in their prime, and we may think they’re pretty good dogs. I’ve found that as the years pass, often we realize they were great.

I just bought a brand new Dogtra 2 system so the Pathfinder 2 collars are 2 years old or less.

The Dogtra Mini System with 4 collars is less than a year old & was only used 8-10 times. The 2 collars in the bubble wrap are rewrite new batteries & new antennas.

Every collar & system comes with working chargers.

The CEO turned 5 today. You can tell from these pics taken over the course of this year that she is very involved in the daily operations & activities at Beagles On Fire. She loves meeting customers, running & training dogs, caring for the dogs, & especially playing with puppies & holding them
