Please be aware there is currently an outbreak of the Canine Influenza virus in Wake county and surrounding areas. Everyone should consider the risks when deciding to board your dog, take them to doggie day care, dog parks and general interactions with other dogs. Detailed information regarding the highly contagious virus may be reviewed at: https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/animal-health-and-welfare/canine-influenza
In addition, the Canine Influenza bivalent vaccine is on back order so many veterinarians are unable to actively provide the vaccine at this time.
Keep in mind that vaccination helps to prevent severe clinical signs of illness but does not prevent infection of a dog or shedding of influenza virus. Upon initial immunization or first vaccination, a second immunization must be given in 2-4 weeks and protection is not complete until at least 7-10 days after the second immunization.

In response to a recent outbreak of canine influenza including the deaths of two dogs, the Wake County Animal Center is taking proactive steps to ensure the health and safety of animals and the community. The shelter will close beginning Friday, Oct. 6 for at least 35 days to help contain the outbreak and the center will stop accepting animals to prevent new cases and protect the total of 449 animals currently being cared for at the shelter.

At this time, there have been two dogs that tested positive for canine influenza, and unfortunately both were fatal. Approximately 57 dogs have been diagnosed with upper respiratory infections since September 15, 2023 โ€“ an uncommonly high number of cases.

As staff members work to quarantine, treat and care for the affected animals in the shelter over the next month, the following services will be affected:
โ€ข Adoptions: Adoptions of all pets, including dogs, cats and other small animals, are being paused. This means the October Pit Bull adoption special has been cancelled.
โ€ข Community Pet Days: Community Pet Days have been cancelled as well.
โ€ข Surrenders: The Wake County Animal Center will NOT allow owners to surrender any animals during this closure. Anyone with an existing appointment to surrender a pet will be notified of their cancellation.
โ€ข Animal Control: All five Animal Control agencies across county (Wake County, Raleigh, Cary, Garner and Holly Springs) will continue responding to emergency animal calls, however, they will not be picking up strays or owner surrenders in the field.
โ€ข Bite Animals: The Animal Center often holds pets on quarantine following bite incidents, however, at this time, those animals will need to be quarantined instead at veterinary offices or in private homes.

Services that will continue to be offered:
โ€ข Lost Pets: If you believe your pet is currently at the Animal Center, please call at 919-212-PETS (7387) for instructions on providing proof of ownership and the process to reclaim your pet. Please note that lost pet walk-thrus inside the building will not be offered during the quarantine period.
โ€ข Owner-Requested Euthanasia: If you need to euthanize your pet due to health or behavioral issues, you can call and request an appointment for euthanasia. Owners will be asked to provide veterinary notes detailing the animal's medical condition or specific behavioral issues. Euthanasia requested by owners will be carried out immediately upon surrender to the Animal Center. Staff reserves the right to refuse this service if the animal does not appear to be in need of euthanasia. Owners will then be referred to a private veterinarian for assistance.
โ€ข Phone Support for Rehoming: If you need to rehome your pet and adopted it from a local organization, we recommend reaching out to them for assistance in finding a new home for your pet or returning it to their programs. We strongly encourage pet owners to work to rehome their pet by using these tips.
โ€ข Phone Support for Stray Pets: If you've found a stray pet and are looking to locate its owner, we provide phone support and guidance on how to reunite the pet with its owner.

I have to share a warm fuzzy. I stopped at a gas station after being on the road for hours and when I came out of the store, a lovely woman from Winston-Salem was parked next to me and walking her two small dogs. She asked if I took donations and then asked me to wait for her to grab something from her car.
The Angel fund grew today, and so did my heart for good pet parents. A big thank you for your generosity, whoever you are. Thank you for blessing me so I can bless others!

Update: Thank you all! We have had an overwhelming and wonderful response to the request for new homes and we are currently working through them. The goats have placement with one of the owners neighbors, and we are following up with the interest in the horses and pigs.

๐Ÿšจ FAMILY CRISIS ๐Ÿšจ

Dear Supporters, we are truly very shocked and saddened to learn of the recent sudden and totally unexpected passing of the husband of one of our wonderful supporters. This has left her bereft and totally devastated. However, she has a special needs child to now care for on her own, and so she has realized that she can no longer keep her current home and animals (horses, goats, and pigs) and she is sadly making arrangements to live closer to her family.

This is a traumatic and overwhelming time, and rehoming her beloved pets was not an easy decision for her to reach; the animals are her world and we are committed to working with her to find new loving homes for them all. They are:

๐ŸŽ Missy, a 21-year-old appaloosa mare, who is well trained, and ridable.
๐ŸŽ Nelson, a gelding, who is also very well-trained. Nelson is a former racing horse, who also used to be a show horse, and did some dressage when younger. The horses will come with supplies, and some riding gear, they are utd on all vaccines and vet exams.

๐Ÿ There are also 6 goats, who are all fully vetted males. These are three sets of brothers, which could be adopted in pairs. They also come with supplies, as well as goat houses for each pair. They are 5 years old. Two are fainting goats.

๐Ÿท Finally, there are 3 potbelly pigs, 2 females, and 1 male they are all spayed and neutered, and are up to date on vaccines. They too will come with supplies and a pig house. Ideally to be adopted together.

This is a stark reminder to us all that life is short, and we really should do the best we can to help others in their time of need. So please help us to help our supporter through this extremely difficult time in her life.

Please consider ADOPTION โ™ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿ™

Can't adopt? then please SHARE.

We only have a short window to find placement.

If you are in a position to adopt or help in any way, please email Beverley at [email protected]

I love seeing what my clients are up to in the pet community. One of my families is currently fostering little Eve through Perfectly Imperfect Pups (she has two siblings there as well). Eve was born with Swimmer's Syndrome. We aren't exactly sure what causes it, but it results in the puppy laying on their belly with limbs paddling outward like a turtle. In many cases, it is very treatable using therapies like this walking box they made for her. It retrains the muscles to be in the correct position.

See the comments for her before and after photos. She is now ready for adoption at https://pipsrescue.org/adoptable-pips/

Be sure to tell me what your pack is up to in 2023!

Dr. Streeterโ€™s Story

You may be surprised to learn that my first love was archaeology. I always imagined a treasure lay buried just under the old abandoned houses I explored as a child. Somewhere along the way in high school, my interest in science turned into an appreciation for medicine as a career. My mind has always enjoyed the mystery behind how our human bodies function and have the ability to heal from tremendous injury or insult. I started college with the intent to pursue physical therapy or medical school but, after a medical crisis with my own dog, I knew I wanted to find out more about veterinary medicine. I began learning about the various career paths provided by veterinary medicine and knew this was the field for me.

My practice as a general practitioner presents me with new experiences and opportunities to problem solve each day. Performing physical exams in the comfort of the petโ€™s normal environment allows me to gather the most accurate information in order to be able to help my patients. Taking time to get to know an owner allows me the ability to discuss and develop medical care options that work for both the pet and the owner. My goal every day as a veterinarian is simply to make the lives of pets and their owners better, and to end the day knowing that I made a positive difference in an animalโ€™s life and the people around them.

Born and raised in eastern North Carolina, I moved to Raleigh in 1999 to attend veterinary school at NCSU CVM. Go Wolfpack! In 2001, I moved to Holly Springs with my husband, and we havenโ€™t left because we like the area so much! We love the feel of a small town just outside of a metropolitan area. I live in Holly Springs with my incredibly loving, supportive extrovert-of-a-husband Jeffrey Tyrone (keep in mind opposites attract and, it is important to note that I am an introvert unless speaking to my clients about my patients) and my two sons, Samuel and Isaiah. We are a family that loves basketball, music, being outdoors (okay, I love being outdoors and my family tolerates it) and embracing our fears (for example, kayaking in alligator-infested water and going over swinging bridges). Of course, our family would not be complete without animals, and ours includes a three-legged cat named Shelby and two dogs, Molly and Tommy Lebron. Yes, Lebron James is our favorite basketball player and our own LeBron rose above some pretty tough obstacles to become a star all of his own amongst the Streeter family. All animals graced our presence via wonderful rescue groups, and we would not have it any other way. Though. never did I know how much a white beagle mix could shed nor how stubborn a pit mix could be! We LOVE them all dearly. As such, I look forward to getting to know you and your family. What better way to do that than in the comfort of your home. It is my privilege to care for your pet and to bring excellent veterinary treatment right into your living room. I believe in tending to your pets as if they were my own and to enable you to be the best pet parent possible!
