Aspen Acres Kennel

Aspen Acres Kennel Aspen Acres is dedicated to the responsible breeding of the Large Munsterlander.

We are dedicated to producing healthy hunting dogs that are family oriented, through the standards put forth by the Large Munsterlander Association of America (LMAA). All Aspen Acres dogs will meet LMAA requirements for health testing as well as hunt tests. The Large Munsterlander is an intelligent versatile pointing dog that is just at home in the uplands chasing ruffed grouse or in the duck mars

h waiting for the wood ducks to come whistling in. They can be trained to chase fur or blood trail deer and are used extensively for both in their native Germany as well as surrounding countries in Europe. Please submit your info at the google link above if you’d like to speak about a puppy.

Darla and Lotti had a great training weekend with us. Both dogs worked on all aspects of the NAVHDA Utility Test this weekend. They really don’t need an off switch when they have so much fun swimming and running through the fields.

Been a while since I posted anything on here. We have been very happy with Darla’s progress from training season into hunting season. She scored a 102 Prize 3 in her NA test, a poor track keeping her from that Prize 1. Thats my fault, and she was only 6 months old at the time of the test. From there we went into hunting season and she has really shown how much she learns and improves with each outing. She has pointed both woodcock and pheasant so far this season, and had her first wild bird shot over her. I am hoping to get her on grouse before the end of the season as well. As she just turned 8 months old barely a week ago I have no complaints with what she is doing in the grouse woods. Here is a bunch of pictures from the past few months.

This girl got the all clear on regular activity from the vet. Now to slowly build her conditioning back up before season starts. I think a relaxing weekend up north with swimming and running around like an idiot is a good start. She has been hanging around the griffs too much. Not sure what she rolled in but wow that is a smell. 😂

When we made the decision to breed Lotti a good friend told us, “Breeding is not for the faint of heart.”
This week, the universe decided we needed to walk a bit of that line. On tuesday night Lotti had emergency surgery for pyometra. She came home last night and she is doing well. You should have seen the look on her face with that large plastic cone before we got her the inflatable collar 😁. This was a stressful couple of days for us but we are happy Lotti will be ok and continue to impress us in the field. Thank you to all of our friends that helped us through this. To all of the potential puppy owners that we had to call, “Thank you.” You were all immediately concerned for Lotti’s well being and showed us we had made the right decisions. Any large munsterlander that makes it into your home will be loved and worked to their fullest content. Good luck in your hunt.

Lotti had a great weekend training for her UT duck search in the fall. She expanded farther than she ever has and searched from 9 1/2 minutes to 14 minutes. The expansion of range is really what we are working on and she is showing her growing confidence in the water.

Today Lotti was the pickup dog for our SEMI NAVHDA Natural Ability test. There were 6 dogs that all did well and prized. Lotti still got a lot of work to do as pickup dog and did a great job. As reward in this 90° heat I ran her in the chukar field once the test was over. She found this hen pheasant that had been used in a track and it couldn’t outrun her. This test weekend was a blast.

Lotti had a good day at our NAVHDA chapter this weekend. She had a great field run that gives me confidence to move on to her duck search AND she got to play with Julie Griswold ‘s 5 week old pups. She was really good with the puppies and I hope that is telling for the kind of mom she will be.

When you have a pointing dog who knows what will trigger that instinct. After a few minutes of solid pointing at what we perceived as nothing, Lotti did this when given the “go easy” command. No idea what this was all about but it sure was pretty!

At 16 weeks old we took Lotti to the local lake to introduce her to water and swimming. At this point its the end of April but the water was still pretty cold. She showed no fear or hesitation and was swimming great pretty quickly.

Part of bird introduction with Lotti. She was 12 weeks old when this video was taken. We expected nothing here except for a puppy to have fun. We got a little glimpse of pointing instinct, use of nose and her retrieving desire. As is evident I was fairly excited with how she did haha.

The season came to a close in Michigan yesterday. We ran with friends in the thumb and put up two hens and saw no roosters. The weather chased us out before the day was done and thats all we could do. I filled in Lotti’s hunting log and started going over the seasons numbers. 17 days in the uplands. 36 points produced birds. Per my watch I walked 98.27 total miles in that time. Lotti pointed ruffed grouse, a covey of sharp-tailed grouse, woodcock and pheasant. She learned to retrieve to hand and she turned 3 a couple days ago. This was only her second upland season as the first couple years were spent in the duck marshes and goose fields. I could not be happier with how her progression has gone. She gets a few month break before NAVHDA training starts up and she earned it! •
