Welcome back to Mindful Monday!

This week, Valentine's Day will give us the opportunity to celebrate the love in our lives. This includes the love we give to ourselves, not just the love we show to others. Loving yourself might look like prioritizing your physical, mental, and emotional health.

So, we'd like to ask you: What is something you can do to give yourself some love?

We recommend spending some time outside in the fresh air! Take a solo walk to relax and recharge, invite some friends to talk and laugh with, or combine your walk with some other activities like meditating, journaling, or drawing.

Thank you to Patuxent Tidewater Land Trust for hosting a community walk at our park last week! We hope everyone had a great time while identifying invasive plants, spotting a few bluebirds, giving treats to the goats, and enjoying the outdoors!

We’re excited to bring you something new for the beginning of each week!

Let us introduce you to Mindful Monday, a weekly series that encourages taking a moment to be present, self-reflect, and engage with thoughts and feelings in a non-judgmental way.

Here's our first question for you: What is something you feel grateful for today? Feel free to respond with your answer in the comments section!

We asked a few of our staff members the same question, and here’s what they had to say...

"I am grateful for the horses entrusted to our care, whose gentle presence allows us to create connections and meaningful experiences for every life we touch." - Melisa, Equestrian Program Director

"I feel grateful for my health and for access to warm shelter, food, and clean water." - Ally, Nature Programs Director

"I am grateful for the promise that comes with the sunrise of each day." - Maria, Executive Director

"I am grateful to be involved with a community that cares deeply for wellness through nature." - Zach, Nature Program Associate

Greenwell Foundation participated in the Southern Maryland Veterans Empowerment Expo on Saturday!

It was powerful to be able to meet with veterans directly and tell them about our free programs and retreat offerings for veterans and first responders. We also connected with many other organizations that are dedicated to supporting veterans and their families, and we look forward to more partnerships with them this year.

Thank you to ServingTogether, the Veterans Health and Wellness Foundation, and Maryland's Commitment to Veterans, and all of the sponsors for supporting veterans, setting up this event, and letting us be a part of it.

Please join us in saying a huge thank you to Ally Rodgers, our nature programs director, for keeping all our animals safe and comfortable during the recent winter weather!

She consistently fed the animals, gave them unfrozen water to drink, transported hay from the barn to the horse fields, and kept the horses blanketed during wet and windy conditions.

We greatly appreciate her for her hard work and willingness to give our animals care when they needed it most!

We had a wonderful time at the St. Mary's County Health Department Employee Wellness Fair yesterday!

It was great to see some of our partners like My Happy Yoga Place and meet other local wellness organizations and businesses. We hope more people feel inspired to come enjoy the beautiful trails of the State Park and participate in some of our programs.

Thank you to St. Mary’s County Health Department for having us!

It's time for a wintery check-in with our horses! 🐴❄️🥰

If you're concerned about whether they feel cold outside, don't worry! Here are three things to remember:

- Since their inner body-to-skin ratio is much larger than ours, they don't get cold as quickly as we do.

- The horses are consistently given hay to eat, so the process of digesting it is keeping them warm from the inside out.

- They are in good health and have clean natural winter coats, which makes them pros at keeping themselves warm. The blankets we put on them are also helping them stay dry.

You can tell that the horses are insulating themselves well, since there is plenty of snow on their backs. This means their body heat isn't escaping through the blankets and melting the snow.
