Mare highlight #4. And these iPhone pics don’t do her justice. Raven carries the very classic Hancock looks with a lot of Mr Roan Hancock blood. Out of another son of Plenty Coup Hancock and a double bred Hancock’s Blue Boy mare. She is also homozygous roan and carrying 31% Mr Roan Hancock blood. She was exposed to a nice young stud, we didn’t preg check her and her foal will most likely be born later but fingers crossed she took 🤞.

Mare highlight #3. Squaw is a neat outcross of Plenty Coup Hancock lines and War Concho/Driftwood on her dam side. She isn’t real tall but is thick as a toad with the looks of a stout cow horse. We didn’t get the chance to break her out and ride her but I would guess she would be a cowy son of gun by the way she rules the roost. She was bred to a high percentage Mr Roan Hancock stud too, should be a nice foal come this spring.

Mare highlight #2, Pearl might be our favorite mare. She is dead broke, travelled all over the mountains as a rider and pack horse, and loves to work a cow. She’s not a real big mare, but conformationally correct and balanced, plus she has out produced her self with her first two foals. She was also bred to Bert for a late March or April foal. We kept back her c**t from last year as a future rider since he has the sweetest and calmest personality.

Mare highlight! Missy was our first mature broodmare and gave us our first ever home raised foal. She’s getting up there in age now but still has one of the smoothest gaits I’ve seen. She produces shapey foals that so far all carry the crème gene. Missy has Blue Valentine on her face papers along with Plenty Try, Ophan Drift and some old school racing lines of White Tie. We bred her to an excellent stud that carries a lot of bone and hoof. I’m not one for palominos, but Bert is by far the nicest one we’ve ever seen. We’ll be seeing this foal in late March or early April. If it’s a stud c**t it will be up for consideration. TBD if it is a filly.

Last weekend it was 60 and sunny, with a few confused frogs chirping. This weekend it’s cold and our first snow flurry. At least we were still able to hang out in the warm in the ole’ Pete while we waited for our alfalfa to get loaded for these ridiculous goats🤣. Lil MS Charlie might not look too enthusiastic in her third pic while I checked on our broodmares but she was toasty warm under her insulated bibs! Don’t worry, we got our Amish made stove a cranking now!

Low quality iPhone pics on a dreary day, but we brought the broodmares home for the winter. We didn’t get around to officially preg checking them but they’re all looking bigger than when we dropped them off on fall grass! Fingers crossed everyone foals out healthy foals come spring. All four have been bred to old school Mr Roan Hancock lines with all kinds of color possibilities including palomino!

The old horse, he served you every day without pause, he let you catch him, saddle him, bridle him and ride him for miles upon miles. He did it with a smile on his face because he was a worker and loved to work and please. The reality is he retires around 25 or younger because they age much quicker than us. And what happens to him then? Does he become the next ‘baby sitter’ available on marketplace or Craigslist? Not here he doesn’t. I honestly don’t want to count how many are on our feed bill these days that literally don’t contribute anymore, goats, cats, horses, old dogs… doesn’t matter. These old souls that devoted so much time to us don’t deserve to be passed around when they’re old, they deserve to live a comfortable, happy life in a home where they feel secure until the end of their days. We don’t trade off our old stock because they’re old, we buy more hay, grain and whatever special supplements they need to live their life comfortably, and when the time comes, we are right there with them when they cross over. Old Elko is creeping along the 25 year mark, he’s been a hard keeper for sure, but some extra time and special feed and he’s still an old spunky man. He gave Austin a lot of miles under saddle, his high school horse and still here with us, he deserves the best and that’s what we’ll do for him. He’s looking pretty good going into winter for his age and I’m sure he’ll be here with us come spring to help teach some c**ts respect! Bless the old horse and his heart!

When the weather is this nice in November, you keep working on outside projects! One day we’ll have our entire small property fenced in with 2x4 woven wire. Every fence line will be horse, dog, goat, and pig proof! Sturdy braced fences are building blocks for any homestead and a necessary skill. Of course the extreme fall rains we’ve had create a challenge, but nothin like good ole’ iron to pull you back outta the mud! Plus Charlie got some much needed vitamin D on this warm sunny Kansas day!

ADGA Nigerian Dwarf Doeling out of the late Dill's DD Uptown *B and one of our cornerstone does Baumgartner Acres Liberty. I have a freshened daughter out of Liberty that did amazing on the stand this year along with a breeding son we are using. The udders on Uptown speak for themselves and I am keeping this doelings full sibiling, just cannot justify keeping both of them with my desire to reduce numbers.

Preserving food on your own has become a lost art, and one we should start investing into again. Our mass food system has been broken for a long time, more ingredients than we can count or pronounce. Old fashioned canning isn’t rocket science and quite simple, it’s amazing what you can preserve with some glass, salt and an old pressure canner. I get asked a lot why I waste so much time canning, because it is without a doubt quite time consuming. Simple- easy, ready to eat meals that are shelf stable for years, plus it reduces freezer space. Taking the tougher cuts of the beef, with our potatoes and carrots, little water and spice and you have an amazing beef stew that can heat up in minutes when you don’t want to cook! True fast food that won’t kill you 🤣

Really nice ADGA Nigerian dwarf doeling that I would without a doubt be retaining if my numbers were lower. Her dam is young and I believe we have a few more good years out of JT. Bonus - she's polled and the only polled one I have available. JT is my best buck in my opinion and one I have already retained quite a bit out of including a breeding son. Her dam did incredible on the milk stand and this doe has the same easy going, lovable personality. She never would take a bottle but is an absolute pet.

We banded the last of our wethers a few weeks ago and have them all sold now. However, I just could not bring myself to put that green cheerio on this guy. This picture doesn't even do him justice. He's not fancy colored, but I love his confirmation, thick all the way through with strong bone. He's just a weanling from the 2024 kid crop but maturing nicely for his age. After evading the green cheerio, I then decided to use him on a doe! He's out of my matriarch doe Nicole - biggest milker, strong immunity, and heavy durable build for a dairy goat, and out of the late Dill's DD Up Town *B. We've been strict on the buck rule, if I wouldn't personally use him then he shouldn't go with his jewels, this guy checks off my boxes. He technically could still be looking for a new home, but I won't be too serious on advertising him yet.

Check out our website for others looking for their new homes!

Producing high quality stock while living a sustainable lifestyle

Ever feel like you were born 100 years too late? We sure do! We are currently just a family of two humans and several other critters. Our little homestead dream started with 3.5 acres and 6 chickens about 7 years ago. We set out with a dream of becoming self sufficient and get closer and closer to that goal every day. We now have a small Nigerian Dwarf Herd consisting of registered stock all backed with great milk genetics, an enormous garden, several chickens and other fowl, a few registered quarter horses and mules that we hope to turn into a small breeding program some day, and occasionally raise a few pigs to fill the freezers and also try to help with the family cattle operation to also help fill our freezer. We also hunt and forage when possible. We are always working on projects and ways to improve our small homestead and like to share our lifestyle with others that are interested! We hope to raise a family of our own in the near future and to teach them the principles and beliefs we have learned and developed based off this lifestyle.
