There is currently a rabies alert in Miami-Dade county after a case was confirmed positive by authorities in a local horse. Rabies is a fatal zoonotic (can be transmitted from animals to humans) disease caused by infection with the rabies virus, which is transmitted via saliva by a bite from an infected animal. Rabies is 100% fatal and there is currently no treatment for infected individuals. Proper vaccination is ESSENTIAL, as it is the only way to prevent infection with the rabies virus.
PRECAUTIONS FROM THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH:
✅ Vaccinate all dogs, cats, and ferrets. All dogs and cats between the ages of 12 to 16 weeks and older should receive a rabies vaccination.
✅ Do not allow pets or humans to interact with wild animals (raccoons, bats, stray animals). Minimize exposure to wildlife as much as possible.
✅ Seek immediate veterinary care if a pet is bitten or scratched by wildlife.
✅ Do not feed or interact with wildlife. Keep trash securely covered to avoid attracting animals.
✅ Teach children to avoid unfamiliar animals and report bites or scratches immediately.
IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION IS ESSENTIAL IF BITTEN OR SCRATCHED BY ANY ANIMAL. FOR FURTHER ASSISTANCE, PLEASE CONTACT THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY AT 305-470-5660.
REPORT ANY SUSPECTED RABIES CASES OR UNUSUAL BEHAVIOR IN ANIMALS TO THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH OR BY CALLING 311.
