We recieved an email from the Ohio Department of Health stating that they will be working with the USDA, APHIS, and local Ohio health departments to distribute an oral rabies vaccine by ground and aircraft to immunize wild raccons in the following counties: Ashtabula, Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Geauga, Jefferson, Harrison, Lake, Mahoning, Portage, and Trumbull; as well as cities of Astabula, Boardman, Conneaut, East Palestine, Geneva, Hubbard, Lisbon, Poland, Struthers, Youngstown, and Warren.

The baiting operation will start on Monday July 29th,2024 and should be completed by August 21st, 2024, as long as the weather cooperates.

Injesting the vaccine with not harm your pet, but the waxy sachets and coating of the vaccine may case vomiting and diarrhea.

Below are some of recommendations:
🐾 Do NOT attempt to remove an ORV bait from an animals mouth due to the risk of being bitten.

🐾It is best to leave the baits alone, unless found in your lawn/driveway/ or any other area where a child/pet may find it.
🙉There is no exposure risk when handling the bait when it is still intact. As a precaution, always recommend that people wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water afterwards. Wearing gloves will protect your hands if you have any small cuts.

🐾 If you have been exposed to the vaccine contents and experience any rash/fever/sore thorat/headache/conjunctivitis/vomiting/diarrhea within 21 days of exposure, seek medical attention.

🐾 If you or your pet has come into contact with the bait/vaccine, contact ODH at 1-800-574-6656 or 614-752-1387

4th of July Pet Safety

With the 4th of July just around the corner, it's very important to keep our pets safe. Thousands of pets are lost every year around this time.

Here are some things that you can do for your pet:

🐶Proper identification
If your pet is not microchipped, it is important to have a collar or tags with your contact information on them at all times. Too many pets are terrified of fireworks and will break out of their confinement areas and run. If your pet is microchipped it is easy for a shelter, vet clinic, etc. scan your pet and use the universal microchip look-up webpage to get your contact information.

🐶Safe Confinement Area
If your pet is terrified of fireworks, it is best to keep them in a safe secure confinement area. Also providing things such as a kong (stuffed with their favorite treat/dog kibble, with either peanut butter, yogurt, or cheese at the opening, then frozen before giving it to them), having the T.V. or radio on, etc. can help distract them from the fireworks. If your pet is known to destroy things under stress, it’s best to keep them in a safe confined area with the TV or radio on.

🐶Pheromone diffusers
Using pheromone items, such as Adaptil for dogs and Feliway for cats, can be a way to help calm them down. They come in different forms such as diffusers, sprays, collars, and wipes. You can add a pheromone diffuser in the area where you are confining your pet to help keep them calm.

🐶Food Safety
For those pets who are joining the festivities, it is important to monitor what they eat, and inform other people to not feed your pup the foods they can’t have. Vomiting and diarrhea is one of the most common things that we see after a holiday such as the 4th of July. Dogs eating new foods, or things that they are not supposed to can cause gastritis, pancreatitis, etc. There are many “human foods” that are not safe for pets to eat.

🐶Protection from the heat
If your pet is joining you for the 4th of July fun, it is very important to make sure that they have access to water and shade at all times. Heat stroke can be deadly quickly for dogs, especially those who are brachycephalic (such as bulldogs, pugs, etc.).

🐶Medications
Medications like Sileo and other fear free medications can help keep your pet calm during the fireworks. Sileo would be our go to medication to do 1st, but it can be safely used with other medications.

Its common with most dogs to not do well with loud noises. About 1/3 of dogs suffer from noise aversion in the U.S. Certain noises can cause fear and anxiety in dogs, and in some cases make them become destructive or run away. The chart below are just some signs of noise aversion in dogs

How can we help? We recommend trying Sileo 1st.

What is Sileo?
🐶It is an oromucosal gel formulation that you administer between the cheek and gums. This allows for transmucosal absorption.
🐶It is the 1st and only FDA approved treatment for noise aversions in dogs.
🐶It is very safe and effective and acts very quickly (it takes about 30 - 60 minutes to take effect, most oral medications need to be given 1 – 3 hours before a stressful event).
🐶It typically lasts for 2 – 3 hours, further doses can be given at minimum intervals of 2 hours, and up to 5 doses can be given during one noise event.
🐶Calms the dog without sedation

If you are worried about your pup this upcoming 4th of July and want to try Sileo, please contact the clinic. Sileo is a prescription medication, we would need to have seen the pet in the past year in order to prescribe it.
