Routine nail trimming is an important part animal care.
🐾As pets age and develop arthritic conditions, overgrowth of toenails may increase discomfort. 🐾Long toenails force weight to the part of the paw not designed for support and may cause a pet to limp or slip on flat surfaces.
🐾Long nails may also catch in carpet or bedding and are more likely to become brittle and broken.

🙀What's with the cat?🙀
As you may have noticed, cats spend a lot of time grooming. Since the lack of thumbs makes it difficult for them to handle a brush, they rely on their tongues to do the preening. Consequently, they end up swallowing a lot of indigestible hair, which comes back up in the form of icky hairballs — usually on the rug or furniture (EEK!).
A cat that grooms itself and gets an occasional hairball or eats or drinks too much too fast and occasionally vomits is typical. However, an increased frequency of vomiting could be a sign of a serious medical issue.
If your cat is throwing up more than occasionally, give us a call ASAP to schedule an exam. 352-795-7110

Should I continue flea and tick prevention during winter?
Yes! Keep your pets on flea and tick protection all year round! We commonly hear “My pets don't need flea and tick prevention in the winter since it’s cold out". This is a myth! Here is why it is recommended all year in Florida.

Fleas: One flea can be brought into your home on you, or you’re pet. That one flea can cause a flea infestation. Fleas survive outdoors in temps as low as 33 degrees for as long as five days. This is plenty of time for them to find a way into your home. Flea eggs live year-round in protected areas such as garages, crawl spaces, porches and houses.

Ticks: Now, we know ticks are more active in the late summer and early fall. Some consider spring and summer as “tick season” but this doesn’t mean they go away in the winter. Ticks are active in temps as low as 32 degrees.
Pets can be exposed to fleas and ticks in a variety of places including your yard, parks, grooming facilities, kennels. Many facilities jump through hoops to insure no fleas are present but it can be an ongoing battle. It only takes one animal unknowingly carrying one flea or tick to spread exposure.

Some pet parents may stop giving preventatives when it gets cold, attempting to save money, but anyone who’s had a flea infestation knows how expensive, difficult and time consuming it is to eradicate. Others may fear that products are not safe. The AVMA provides a greatly detailed guide to safety regarding preventives. https://www.avma.org/public/PetCare/Pages/Safe-use-of-flea-and-tick-preventive-products.aspx

While the risk of your pet getting a flea or a tick in the winter is lower than in other seasons, be aware it’s not impossible. Pets may still contract a tick-borne disease, and pets and homes may still become infested with fleas. When this occurs, it’s far more costly to treat your pet for an infection or infestation.

There are many different preventatives on the market. No single product is right for every pet. Talk to your primary veterinarian about what they feel is best for your individual pet.

They're creepy, they're crawly...and they can carry diseases. Fleas and ticks aren't just a nuisance, but pose animal and human health risks.
