As a pet death doula, I believe wild birds who know they are close to death will often “find” a human to help tem transition to spirit peacefully. Birds who are in this state are fearful of the pain of predators harming them or destroying their co**se. Some just do not want to die lonely and alone. They will place themselves in the path of a person they believe will help them.

Last night, my son’s roommate went for a walk and found a severely injured bird. As it was covered with ants, he first assumed it was dead but realized it was moving and still alive so he brought it home. Our family has done bird rescue for decades so my son knew what to do - wiped off the ants, set up a nest of towels to keep it warm, gave it food and water. The bird went straight to sleep in this comfy space.

In the morning, they discovered the bird had transitioned to spirit . They buried it under a tree in their yard, Having grown up rescuing birds, my son has dealt with death and saying goodbye but this was a first for his roommate. My son said what made them both feel better was the sunbeam that shined on the spot where they buried the bird. I told him it was the bird saying thank you and the universe telling them they had done good.

When I am contacted to communicate with a pet in spirit, it is often not with a pet who has recently passed but one who has transitioned months, years or even decades ago. People will torture themselves over decisions regarding a pet’s end of life - was the euthanasia too early or too late, should I have opted for euthanasia or actual death, does my pet hate me, does my pet forgive me?

Every pet in spirit I have spoken to has love in their heart for their people and knows any decision made was done fully out of compassion and love. They do not focus on their death at all, only on the lives they shared and are filled with gratitude for this.

To see the heaviness of guilt and grief lift off a person’s soul and psyche due to the honesty of their pet in spirit is a gift of love.
