We have had great success with Hood River Valley FFA members on staff here at YHS. Currently we have three employees, including our manager, who are current or past FFA members. I am confident that FFA has a lot to do with why they are knowledgeable and hard working. Please go support these guys next weekend if you can!

It's cold out there! Every night is night check but on these cold nights they are super important. Topping off water buckets with warm warm to try to delay the inevitable freeze (our barns weren't built for these cold temps 20 years ago!), toss horses an extra flake to stay warm, double checking outside troughs are plugged in to stay thawed, making sure our outside horses are cozy too. Bonus- moonlight sparkles on the snow and owls hooting in the tree tops. Stay warm everyone!

These last few weeks have been sunny, cold and calm. A respit from the mud, a chance to feel warmth on your back in the outdoor arena and ride some trails. Seems like tomorrow we head back into a more normal winter weather pattern. And the horses seemed to know they needed to soak it all up! I counted 9 laying down at one point! Hope you have been able to enjoy the sun too!

Everyone was a winner at today’s arena etiquette workshop! We are so lucky to have enough avid riders and active community members to need arena guidelines and instruction on how to ride in a crowded space. If you missed today’s event, look for posted arena guidelines or ask Mariah for a few friendly tips. You might even score one of the leftover prizes. Winter brings many challenges- cold, mud, rain, snow, freezing rain, mud, blankets, mud. It also can limit the use of our outdoor arena, field and trails making our indoor arena a bit more crowded. This isn't a unique situation- most thriving stable communities have a busy arena between lessons, training and free riding. Riding solo is lovely but so can riding in an arena with other fellow horse lovers, especially if you know the rules of the road. Join Mariah and Grace next Sunday to learn and practice good arena etiquette to make everyone's ride smooth, safe and fun. It is also great practice for your horse to be exposed to a busy arena so you are prepped for this season's shows! Hope to see you there!

What a day! It started off with pink skies, continued with a festive barn clean with festive drinks, music and mucking and ended with a surprise white Christmas as the horses came in for the night! We are blessed with a wonderful community here and in HR and today was no exception. Huge thanks for the help and festive cheer to all! If your holidays were filled with as much love and laughs as ours, we are all lucky.
