So as some of you may know, we had an absolutely wonderful day in Knox Square, Hoover. But aside from a bit of that one-of-kind Pampered Pup Goodness going on, we ran into this beautiful doodle girl named Abby!
Awesome awesome dog, but there's one thing...
She's been known to be a bit child-aggressive 😭 Abby often charges aggressively at children. Barking aggressively when approached by kids.
Well many would list a number of potential causes for this condition.
Here are a few of those suggested causes...
1. The dog has potentially been mishandled and/or been physically or psychologically abused by a child.
2. The dog feels the need to protect their owner. It just coincidentally happens to be from children.
3. The dog feels intimidated by small children because they are at said dogs eye level.
4. The dog doesn't have small children that live with or around them so they are not exposed to children often. So as a result, they are not accustomed to anyone approaching them that aren't the size of their own humans.
These could all potentially be considerable factors to some. All of these things could be right. But one potential deficit always reigns supreme. And we have a slight hint at what it is...
Nonetheless this dog is not only just as beautiful as she can be, she also was placed in an environment, atmosphere, situation and scenario where there was no place or room for a "dog-aggression". With about 45 minutes to an hour of our grooming training alone, sweet Abby was subconsciously put in a state of mind or "mindset" (a mental state or inclination) that dismisses, expels and evicts character conditions like the one her mother says she has been functioning in as well as things other dogs may suffer with such as separation anxiety, depression and even undesirable behaviors such as excessive barking, destructiveness Etc.
Your mindset is a set of beliefs that shape how you make sense of the world and yourself. It influences how you think, feel, and behave in any given situation. It means that what you believe about yourself impacts your success or failure.
Mindsets can influence how people (dog) behave in a wide range of situations in life. For example, as people (dog) encounter different situations, their mind triggers a specific mindset that then directly impacts their behavior in that situation. says Verywell Mind.
With a slight adjustment to her mindset, in this moment, her perspective of children had been changed. What does one have to do to bring about this change, you might ask. Is this a lasting change? Is her human family capable of sustaining this change? Can this change be trusted? They are adequate and surprisingly detailed answers to these questions and they all hinge upon leadership. Not your breed of dog, not your age of dog, not your size of dog and not your personal past. It lies in the hand of that whom has influence.
Under New Management, even for just a moment, Abby understood that child-aggression was not a part of her job description. And as a result we pulled off not only a phenomenal groom, but a fun photo shoot with guess what, a brand new small child! That she has never met and or been handled by!
That sweet baby did her thing! So did Abby! 🩷🩷🩷
Sometimes understanding is what makes the difference! And you best believe Ashley’s Pampered Pups gets it! And yet another dog goes home not only beautiful, but even if it's just a little, BETTER as well! 😉
