Ryker is regretting his decision to over indulge in a green bean bush, which resulted in food bloat.

Food bloat happens when a dog eats too much or too quickly, causing their stomach to become overly full and distended. While it's not always life-threatening, it can be uncomfortable. This can lead to another condition known as GDV. When food bloat happens and then the pet runs, plays, or rolls around, the stomach can flip and turn on itself, cutting off circulation and leading to shock (GDV- Gastric Dilatation Volvulus). GDV can be life-threatening and should be treated immediately. Symptoms include vomiting, retching, nausea (lip licking, drooling, etc), and a bloated abdomen. Lucky for Ryker, we caught it early enough to manage with hospitalization and IV fluids, which aids in GI motility.

Welcome to Patton Chapel Animal Clinic in Hoover, Alabama. Our veterinarians and staff are dedicated to providing all pets with compassionate, high quality care in a family-friendly environment. Patton Chapel Animal Clinic has served the Hoover, Vestavia Hills and greater Birmingham area since 1951. In May 2012, Dr. Chase Whitworth took over ownership and has since emphasized excellence in treatment and facilities, as well as actively connecting with the local community. We are members of the Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce and support the Shelby Humane Society, Greater Birmingham Humane Society, Adopt a Golden Birmingham and local animal rescue groups.

With a passion for helping animals, our veterinarians and staff provide complete medical and surgical care for all pets at any stage of life. Whether a pet suffers from a specific illness or simply needs a routine exam, Patton Chapel Animal Clinic’s veterinary team takes great pride in addressing every pet’s specific needs.
