I saw a snail creeping slowly across the ground.

I thought if I remove his shell, he could move faster. But it only made him more sluggish.

Mystery Snails float or sink at will. They can float to the top to attach to the side of the glass or sink down to the bottom, using their foot like a parachute to cushion the landing.

Mystery Snails have a siphon they use to breathe in oxygen at the top of the water line — they have both gills and a lung. They use this little snorkel like there’s no tomorrow, so make sure they have a few inches of air above the water.

While Mystery Snails prefer algae, they will readily consume vegetables, plants, fish foods, brine shrimp, insects and even dead fish or other decaying matter that they come across while scavenging the aquarium bottom. So whip up some blanched vegetables like kale or carrots for your snail babies.
If you keep this species with live plants be sure to provide them algae wafers, vegetable based sinking pellets or pieces of vegetable so that they will not turn on the plants living in the aquarium.

In the home aquarium, Mystery Snails are more active at night, while during the day they will usually stay in more shaded or darker area of the aquarium. When it is night time, the Mystery snail becomes active and engages in behaviors relating to feeding, as well as mating and laying eggs.

Mystery snails are one of the most popular additions to freshwater tanks. Thier stunning colors add beauty and they do most of the cleaning for you by eating the algae. You will enjoy seeing your snails individual personalities and watching these beautiful snails climb to the top of your aquarium and gracefully float back to the bottom of your tank. These snails come out of their shells to feed unlike other snails. They are a very peaceful addition to your aquarium and like to live with other peaceful fish.

Maximum size of Mystery Snail is up to 6 inches, however the norm is 2-3 inches. They reach full growth at one year. Life span is usually 1-1 & 1/2 years sometimes longer.

How is an mystery snail's circulatory system different to a human's?
Mystery snails have an open circulatory system, unlike the closed one that humans exhibit. This means that the heart pumps blood, but instead of pumping blood through veins, the organs are bathed into the blood pushed by the heart.

Here is an interesting bit of snail trivia: Snails are either left-handed or right-handed just like humans! All Mystery Snails are right-handed, also known as dextral. The technical term for being left-handed whether you are a snail or a human is sinistral (derived from the word “sinister”). You can determine the handedness of a snail by holding it with the opening (aperture) facing you and the point of the snail facing up. If the opening is to your right side, it is a dextral snail. If the opening is to your left side it is one of those sinister left-handed snails

Why is it called mystery snail?

They are called “mystery” snails because females give birth to young, fully developed snails that suddenly and “mysteriously” appear.

The babies arrive the size of a pin head and grow to an average of three inches.
