There exists molecular gastronomy, molecular biology and molecular equation. Molecular equitation was coined in the book "The Alchemy of Lightness" co-authored by Dr. Maria Katsamanis. Molecular equitation, which is otherwise known as the scientific study of the interplay of mechanisms when horse and human meet, communicate and interact. Molecular equitation is not so much a technique as an approach, an approach from the viewpoint of the so-called basic sciences to provide basic ingredients key to the perfect ride, the perfect connection to our horses thereby making this accessible to anyone.

Nearly 15 years ago, with the support of Dr. Anthony Tobia and the Department of Psychiatry, I pioneered an elective course to teach improved bedside manners to our medical students at Rutgers- RWJ Medical School.

With the help and continued support of the herd at Spring Reins of Hope and Christianna Capra we have been able to offer this course bi-annually to our medical students.

To maintain my academic title of Clinical Assistant Professor at Rutgers-RWJ Medical School, these days, I teach this course and lecture occasionally through the year on topics such as hypnosis for pain management. It is a refreshing recharge from my daily tasks as a horse trainer. I am grateful to have had the education and access to knowledge where cross-fertilization can enhance the lives of both horses and humans.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support. Whether you have attended my online events, purchased a course, hosted me at your farm, or was a guest at my farm I THANK YOU!

In 2023, we relocated to Hopewell, New Jersey and made Mythos Farm our home. Mythos Farm also became the homebase for our nonprofit, Friends for Pegasus, 501c3 as well as our Mythos Tack operation. Our hope is that whether it is education, instruction, horse training, reliable or ethical products- we can be here for you and your horse.

It took us a minute to settle into our new home. We had many renovations, and changes that took up much of my time. I had to push aside invites from many of you who kindly organized clinics at your farms. But, 2024 is a new chapter.

We are so fortunate to have horses in our lives. And I am grateful to have all of you who love them and support their wellness.

Riding is an equestrian art, which means that it can be elevated to whatever we want it to be. We would expect that anyone involved with a horse is able to feel that artistic and spiritual dimension. It is very sad that most people have no awareness that it even exists.

With this book I wanted to demonstrate that there is more to riding than sitting on the horse. My vision was to show that it is a creative art that can be developed and enjoyed and shared. For riding to emerge as "something more," the horse must be respected and his well-being held in high regard. It is necessary, then, to put your equine partner in a physical and mental position where he can express himself. That is of primary importance.

Knowledge of the core principles of the "Classical School" of training philosophy has been lost, and consequently, the very essence of dressage has been challenged. Many authentic écuyers (riders) have, in their life time, failed to translate the intricacies of their own riding into a language from which others can learn. Many have flirted with the manner of fame brought only by sport dressage competition. Many have "sold their soul," so to speak. Very few know the classical principles or defend them, as they are not very popular in our modern society of instant gratification.

Taming is not “breaking” a horse. A “broke” horse is a slave[opening scene]. There are kinder methods, methods that are compassionate and full of wisdom.

🐎🏛This ancient quote was said to have been spoken by Alexander the Great upon taming Bucephalus: οἷον ἵππον ἀπολλύουσι, δι᾽ ἀπειρίαν καὶ μαλακίαν χρήσασθαι μὴ δυνάμενοι, which translates to “Look what horse they lose, because they do not have the ability or tact to tame it.” This ancient text and incredible wisdom was spoken by a boy of no more than 14, and who went on to conquer much of the ancient world upon the back of Bucephalus, a horse that grown men had tried to dominate and failed. His teacher, Aristotle, helped to instill this wisdom, and in Greek culture even today it is said that those who are good with horses are wise and worth following...

Remember that relaxation and trust are the foundations of a true connection! 🐎🌟 Just breathe 💆🏼‍♀️Dr. Maria’s experience in the area of psycho-physiology has imparted on her the importance of calm and confidence in the daily training and of its utmost importance. Inviting the breath, for example, upon entering the arena and during the ride is a must. Unfortunately, one sees sessions where the horse never truly relaxes, never takes a breath while in motion. This is given cursory importance for many.

Move beyond these simplistic overtures of relaxation and make it a priority! Want to learn more on the effects of an “open” horse on the muscles, joints and psyche? Stay tuned for more!

🐎🇬🇷 From beast of burden to dancing partner! Another sculpture from the museums here in Greece identifies a horse as a “beast of burden carrying two amphorae,” a type of large vase or clay jug that is a common vessel of ancient societies. Today, Dr. Maria’s goals, are to create a deeper, more meaningful connection between humans and equines. Removing the “burden,” horses now are our dancing partners and teammates as our relationship with this amazing animal continues to evolve 😍

The dynamic of student, instructor, and horse goes back thousands of years! 🐎 This fresco at a museum in Crete, Greece almost looks as if it could be a scene from today, in any number of arenas around the world. It is truly amazing how our bond with these magnificent animals seems to transcend time 💙🏛🏺

Lightness comes as a result of the rider's body and mind. First, the rider has to "get out of the way"-of what is (remember, the horse is already light). When the rider can do this and can put the horse in a correct position while maintaining enough energy to help the horse stay there, it is then that the dance will happen. The quality of the dance is dependent on the quality of the dancer, especially of he who leads. A monk once said that inviting God in is not enough. You have to "get out" first-there is only space for one. If you didn't catch it in person, here are a few of my favorite moments from this past weekend's Nassau Film Festival!The event showcased many excellent films, including our very own Friends for Pegasus short film, Standardbred Ex-Harness Racer. If you aren't yet familiar with my nonprofit, Friends for Pegasus, this film is a great introduction. I founded Friends for Pegasus in 2016 with the mission of promoting better understanding of equine wellness through the rehabilitation and transformation of horses who need a second chance. A critical part of that mission is also sharing the stories of our horses through inspirational and educational content like this film. I was honored to attend and have the opportunity to be part of this project, and of course, was so excited to share Tag's incredible transformation story with the world. I also want to send a huge "Thank you" to everyone who attended in support of Friends for Pegasus, and came together to make the event truly unforgettable.
