🐶 Attention Clients: 🐱

Due to personal reasons, I will be discontinuing my services and closing Tips for Tails officially March 4th.

This closure is indefinite. I had a wonderful time meeting new people and seeing all the wonderful friends. I will miss the conversations and falling in love with everyone's little family members.

So you've been behind on your pets nail trimmings, the quicks are long and even after a trim they still click.
THATS OKAY! It takes time, but with routine trimmings the quick will reced to the place it should be!

This is an adult female that after her first or second trimming we took before and after photos. It's been a couple months and look at the difference what routine trimmings can do!

Let's talk grooming! Did you know grooming is essential for your little friend?

Even those with short to no hair require frequent grooming, yes this means even brushing and bathing! Grooming is essential to not only help your bond with your pet, but to help both prevent health issues and detect early health issues. Did you know a lot of internal issues can show signs through their coat/skin? Frequent grooming can help you pick up on these changes and get them the help they need sooner!

With pets with long hair, keeping up with very frequent brushing can leave their fur soft and fluffy. Can you imagine having long hair and brushing it once every so often? It's painful, itchy and just unhygienic to have matted hair so close to your skin- that's how your little friend feels!

If you're not sure what shampoo, conditioner or brush to use be sure to ask a groomer to guide you in the right direction! Remember if your pet has health issues that affect the coat/skin (I.e allergies) it may be best to reach out to your veterinarian first!

This post is slightly different from my other posts, but as it's March 1st I figured this is a good time as any.

On February 26th, 1987 Ronald Reagan declared March as disability awareness month. On an unknown date, October became national disability employment awareness month.

Disabilities have a wide variety of showing- can be through mental, physical, etc. When one is disabled they may even need medical equipment to help keep them more independent. Medical equipment can be a variety of wheelchairs, oxygen tanks, service animals, and so much more. Yes, you heard that right service dogs are considered medical equipment per the ADA (American Disabilities Act). Though when you see them majority of the time they're working, I promise they do get time to be just dogs or mini horses.

Per the ADA the only two species able to be service animals are dogs and mini horses (very limited states accept service cats). Yes, there is a difference between therapy, service and emotional support dogs!

Fun fact- I have disabilities of my own, though I refuse to show it very often! Maxwell is my fully task trained service dog and Toast is my service dog in training! Also, Toast turns 1yrs old on the 7th!

Humans use to have a**l glands!

Now that I have your attention, yes it is true humans use to have a**l glands, but we eventually evolved without them. Unfortunately, most mammals have not evolved without them.

A**l glands are essentially the animals ID - it has every little detail of who the animal is and what condition their health is in. Most of the time your pet is able to express their a**l glands while they deficate, but they can also do it during high excitement or high stress. Ever smelt a strong fish-like smell potentially a brown liquid in sight? There it is! That is your pets a**l glands!

Though most are able to handle their own situation, sometimes for multiple reasons, they're unable to express their a**l glands. When this occurs the a**l glands still fill with the stinky liquid, if not taken care of they unfortunately do abscess and create their own exit. This is extremely uncomfortable and painful for your poor pet, so be sure to be on the look out for potential issues associated with their a**l glands!

Don't forget I offer a**l gland expressions to dogs - Unfortunately I'm very selective on cats I express.

Did you know mammals need their ears cleaned? Dogs, Cats, rats, guinea pigs, etc all have natural ear wax that build up in their ears. The ear wax needs to be cleaned out regularly to prevent your pet becoming uncomfortable or even leading to ear infections!

Did you also know that dogs and cats have L-shaped ear ca**ls? This makes build up of debris, wax, water, etc extremely easy. It also makes it easy for owners to accidentally rupture the ear drum; this is where my motto in ear cleaning comes from!

Don't forget ear cleaning is a service I offer!

Don't clean where you can't see, especially if you don't know where the drum is. - Ear Cleaning motto

Next time you think it's okay to skip brushing their teeth, their dental chews/treats or even brush off the veterinarians recommendation of a dental cleaning...think what if your mouth looked like theirs?

Why are keeping up on nail trims important? I get this question a lot; did you know overgrown nails can actually change your animals posture? Did you know your pets nails can grow so long it curls back and grow into their foot? This is extremely painful for any living creature.

Most animals need their nails, talons, etc trimmed every 3 to 4 weeks. Though it varies from animal to animal, it's best to keep track and figure out the right time length for your pet!

Don't forget I travel to you and perform this service on any creature with nails, talons or claws!

Did you know that obesity in pets is just as common as obesity in humans?? Obesity in our pets can lead them down a road of other serious issues and can even shorten their life span!

Be sure to read the descriptions and see where your pet falls on the Body Condition Scale. This is the same scale your vet uses! If your concerned your pet may not be a healthy weight be sure to reach out to your vet!
