If you have no reliable way to make sure your dog comes when called, it’s so easy for recall to seem optional. I love using long lines when I’m practicing with the pups that come to Piper’s Place for training. Your dog gets to have a lot of freedom, and you still have a leash to help you if he/she gets distracted or doesn’t have reliable recall yet. 🐶 2. Make it fun! This may seem obvious to some of you, but it’s always a great reminder.When we’re teaching our dog to come when called, having something valuable to “pay” them with is going to be SO IMPORTANT. Your dog will let you know what is rewarding, so listen to him/her and use that!Examples of valuable rewards can be stinky treats, kibble, a toy, tons of affection, and even freedom to go sniff. 🐶 3. Practice recall at random times, not only when it’s time to go inside, leave the park, stop playing or doing something fun. If “Piper, come!” only happens when it’s time for the fun to end, your dog is not going to be interested or motivated to come to you anymore.If you’re out playing at the park with your dog, practice “Piper, come!”, then keep playing with your dog. Today was Honey’s biggest field trip so far and she did amazing! Our goals for today were: a loose leash walk, build a little more engagement with me, exposure to new things to help build her confidence, practice a couple basic commands, and meet a few people to practice polite greetings. She crushed all of those goals and I’m so proud of her. Honey is with me for another week to continue training, and she is officially looking for her forever family! There’s a lot more behind the scenes of this teaching process, and as you can see in this video, enthusiasm and drive to respond to cues is a very high priority. Your dog will be far more likely to respond reliably to your cues if:
1. He/she understands the cue you’re giving and how to respond
2. The dog sees his/her benefit/reward in the situation and knows how to get that benefit/reward
3. You’re taking the time to build a relationship based on communication, trust, and respect
4. You hold him/her accountable if he/she does not respond with some form of consequence **ONLY use a punishment if your dog fully understands the cue you’re giving

Recall practice with Daisy this morning! I took these videos right after Penny’s training session to show everyone where we’re at with recall for both pups. This video is very similar to Penny’s video (go watch that if you haven’t yet!), and there will be another video posted in a few minutes explaining the recall with the e-collar and different ways I practice with the dogs to make sure they fully understand their recall cue. Both girls are doing amazing and on track to be off leash by this weekend! They’ll be going on field trips tomorrow and Friday, so I’ll try to get some videos of those.

Off Leash Training with Max the Golden Doodle!
Off leash training with Max yesterday morning! He’s officially able to be fully off leash with the exception of busy public places. We’re still building confidence in those environments, so that aspect of off leash training takes a little more time (and leash laws make it difficult to train off leash in public).
I’m so happy with his progress and we still have almost a week to continue working together! The main focuses now are calling him into a heel position while he’s off leash (pretty advanced skill), confidence building in busy environments, and continue working through his nervous reactivity toward people. He still occasionally barks and tries to retreat if a stranger gets too close, so I’m showing him that I (and his owner) will always keep him safe, so he doesn’t need to worry about trying to protect himself.
*Side note regarding the e-collar I show on the video: this collar goes to level 100 and Max responds best to levels 3-6. This e-collar (the only brand I use) uses muscle stimulation technology and the goal is to always use the lowest levels necessary to get the result you need, so you never have to worry about your dog being injured, or scared during my off leash training program. Your dog’s safety (mental, emotional, and physical) is always the #1 priority, and I aim to make training as enjoyable as possible for you and your dog. You’re far more likely to continue your dog’s training if it’s enjoyable for both of you! Also, please consult a professional trainer with experience using e-collars before you try one on your dog. They are powerful tools than can unfortunately be misused, which is why they get such a bad name from people that haven’t used them or don’t know how to use them in a safe, beneficial way.

Super cute video of Tommy for your Saturday morning. Tommy is adoptable and he’s such a sweet boy! He’s still going through recovering and healing from his surgeries, but before we know it he’ll be good as new and living the good life. He’ll be such a wonderful companion! I’m still doing evaluations on how he does with other dogs, but so far he’s done really well around Piper, who’s very calm and easy going. He hasn’t shown any signs of aggression or resource guarding.
