Did you know that the equine scapula (shoulder blade) is completely suspended by only soft tissues?

Unlike humans, horses lack a clavicle (collarbone,) so the entire fore of the horse (60% of the entire body) is supported only by muscles, fascia, tendons, and ligaments. This is why it’s so important that the thoracic sling is fully and correctly functional.

If your horse cannot or struggles to lift in the fore and engage in the hind, chances are there is dysfunction and/or discomfort in these supporting structures.

Kinesiology tape is a breathable and stretchy fabric with adhesive backing created to improve physical comfortability and performance. Equi-Tape is what I utilize in my practice and is specifically designed for use on horses.

Here are some of the specific benefits of kinesiology tape.

✔️ Decrease Swelling: By pulling up on the hair and skin, circulation is restored, allowing lymph and blood to flow to remove toxins and metabolic by-product from areas with edema or swelling.

✔️ Instant relief for tight, sore muscles: For severe hypertonic muscles, I always follow the massage with a taping application to extend the effects of what I did. Long after I have left the barn, the tape continues to give constant proprioceptive feedback to allow the horse’s body to adapt to the new feeling/lack of pain and tension to allow for better movement and posture.

✔️Facilitate and Accelerate Healing: Increased circulation and oxygen to an injured area promotes quicker healing of an injury.

✔️Relieve Pain: The tape decompresses nociceptors/pain sensory receptors immediately relieving painful areas.

✔️Muscle Activation or Decompression: With a deep understanding of muscle anatomy including insertion and origin points, the tape can be specifically applied with a certain amount of stretch and recoil to either encourage a weak muscle to activate or a hypertonic muscle to relax.

It is what allows the body to know exactly where every part of the body is in space. The tape works to influence mechanoreceptors in the skin to increase proprioceptive input. Simple coronet band applications immediately improve horses who stumble or find it difficult to walk over logs.

Kinesiology tape can be specifically applied to support joints, tendons, and ligaments all while allows full range of motion and increasing circulation. Distal limb support applications are perfect for lighter exercise to prevent overheating with polos or sport boots. The tape can also be worn under protective wear and can be poulticed over and hosed down without coming off.

There’s nothing like a wicked Before & After with a super sore back!

For this horse I utilized manual massage, Multi Radiance Medical Laser Shower at multiple frequencies, and Equi-Tape to finish it off. These before and after videos are just about twenty minutes apart.

P.S. be sure to use only the pads of your fingers or your palm to check for muscle soreness. Never use a finger nail or anything scratchy. Some horses will react to something pokey despite zero actual muscle soreness.
