🎃Halloween Safety Tips from Lake Road Animal Hospital🎃

Halloween can be a fun time for both humans and pets, but it's important to remember that some treats can be dangerous for our furry friends. Chocolate, in particular, contains theobromine, which is toxic to pets.

To keep your pet safe this Halloween:

Store all candy and treats out of reach. Pets are naturally curious and may be tempted to try a sugary snack.

Be mindful of decorations. Avoid using decorations that contain small, choking hazards or toxic materials (especially for those curious kitties.)

Keep your pet indoors on Halloween night. The noise and excitement of Halloween can be stressful for some pets, and it's best to keep them inside in a safe and quiet environment.

Provide pet-safe alternatives

Below is a short video on a cute dog-safe Halloween treat!

In the comments we will link a cute cat treat recipe !

***"When giving your pet treats, be mindful of their diet. If they’re on a special diet, make sure the treats are appropriate. If you’re not sure, ask your vet."***

Our veterinarians and staff are here to help you ensure your pet's safety and well-being throughout the Halloween season.

⚠️If you suspect your pet has eaten chocolate or any other harmful substance, please contact a veterinary office immediately.⚠️

Meet Jess, one of our amazing vet techs! 🐾 She has been a vet tech for 6 years and joined Lake Road this year. Jess is skilled , compassionate and brings a calming presence that helps not only pets but their owners as well.

Jess says “I love surgery. I love making a difference in animals lives to extract those rotting teeth or removing a mass. Or even spaying and neutering to decrease the pet population and decrease the health risks for that animal in the future”.
When she's not in surgery you can find Jess painting, doing puzzles, or hanging out with her pets. She has 11 cats (many of which have come to her through work),2 dogs , a bearded dragon ,a leopard gecko, hermit crabs and some fish. She's a true animal lover, and her passion for her work is evident in everything she does.
We're so grateful for Jess and all she does for patients as well as her coworkers.
We're lucky to have her as part of our team. Thank you, Jess! 🎉

Gabriella, LVT

Gabriella is one of our most compassionate licensed veterinary technicians. She adores every pet that walks through the doors but holds a soft spot in her heart for beagles and elderly chihuahuas. She started her vet tech journey at Fox College in Illinois in 2018 but has since traveled to many other amazing places. Her favorite part about being a LVT is just getting to know the pets' personalities and being an integral part of their lives.

When not at work you can find her enjoying the outdoors through hiking, fishing, and many other activities. She is also a very family-oriented person and loves connecting with her family whenever she can. This loving nature aids her in her tech journey.

Gabriella has been such a great addition to our team, and we are so lucky to have her here. Her ability to assist with anything that needs to be done and her dedication to the field makes her not only an amazing person, but an amazing LVT as well. Let's all thank Gabriella for her years of service to this field and her kind-hearted nature towards all animals!

Happy Vet Tech Appreciation Week to our incredible Chenoa! 🎉

Chenoa has been a cornerstone of our Lake Road Animal Hospital team for approximately two years and her dedication to her profession is evident in every interaction she has with our patients. She has been a vet tech for 5 years and brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our team.
Her unwavering love for animals is the driving force behind her career choice. Chenoa finds satisfaction in being able to provide care and comfort to pets in need as well as a trusted source of comfort for our clients.
Outside of work you can find her with her horses enjoying barrel racing and breakaway roping. Chenoa also enjoys collecting house plants and gardening , in fact her plant collection is so extensive, she has to use a GPS to find her way through her living room. And every time she turns on the woodstove, the plants start having a little dance party, thinking they're in the tropics.
She shares her home with her adorable son, five dogs, three horses, and seven cows.
We are truly grateful for all of hard work, dedication, and unwavering commitment to our patients and their families.
Chenoa is a testament to the incredible work that veterinary technicians do every day. Thank you, for all that you do. 🐾❤️

Erin, LVT/Patient Care Coordinator

Happy vet tech appriaciation week!!!

Erin is one of our many amazing licensed veterinary technicians. She went to Delhi college and really enjoyed her classes, but was still unsure on what she wanted to do after graduation. She worked many jobs in the field of vet med, but ultimately landing on general practice as her true joy in life. She enjoys watching the patients grow and loves that she gets to aid them in being healthy all the way up into their elderly years.

When Erin is not hard at work in at the practice you can find her baking, reading, and staying fit through weightlifting. She currently is the proud owner of five amazing cats named Bob, Tinkerbell, Earl, Gaston, and Almond. She is also currently fostering a cutie named Muppet.

Erin has given over 20 years of service and expertise to this field, and we appreciate everything she does for this practice and its patients. Her love for animals, matched with her unwavering technical skills makes her a great asset to the Lake Road Animal Hospital team. Please help us thank Erin for her hard work and dedication!

Heartworm is here!

We have diagnosed our first heartworm positive pet with no travel history. This means that heartworm has made its way to our area. Please make sure you have your pet on a heartworm preventative monthly year-around. Prevention is key for these diseases as treatment can cost between $1,000-2,000 while preventatives cost between $10-40 a month depending on the size of your pet. We want to do everything in our power to stop the spread of heartworm and to protect our pets. Please call or text the office at 607-733-6503 to learn more about heartworm prevention.

For more information about the spread of heartworm please visit the American Heartworm Association website.

What in the world is going on at Lake Road Animal Hospital???

There are some big changes happening within the team at Lake Road Animal Hospital, and that is currently affecting our hours.

🧳Many of you know that Dr. Mulligan has left the practice and moved with her family to another state due to a change in her husband's career path. We miss her as much as all of you!!!

🧸Babies have been a large part of Lake Road Animal Hospital since May of this year. THREE of our team members have expanded their families this year! Two of those wee ones arrived a week apart over the past 2 weeks. Dr. Gardiner and Ali, one of our assistants working to become a Licensed Veterinary Technician, are both home with their new babies and doing very well. As you can imagine, having them away from the practice for the remainder of 2024 has created some challenges in our schedule.

👩‍⚕️We have hired a new associate veterinarian to join our team! Lake Road Animal Hospital has been incredibly fortunate to find a doctor who fits so well with our team, and we are thrilled to have her start with us TOMORROW! We will share more details about Dr. Walker this week, but know that she comes to us as an experienced veterinarian ready to jump into meeting our clients and helping to keep your pets healthy.

While we work through the process of training Dr. Walker in the ways of Lake Road, our doctor schedules will be a little out of the ordinary. Please be patient with us while we work to ensure that the team is fully ready to serve you and your pets.

🐾For October, you can find Dr. Brennen in the practice on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and every other Wednesday. Dr. Hughes will be here Monday through Wednesday. Dr. Walker will be working Tuesday through Friday. Dr. Wilcox will continue to be here on Monday and Friday mornings. And we'll have relief doctors as we can schedule them on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

We currently do not have doctors to work on Saturdays, and thus will be closed Saturdays. This may change as we move into the final two months of 2024, and we will keep you updated. In addition, we may have an assistant/receptionist working Saturday morning for emergency pick-up of medications or diets. However, this role is likely to be hit and miss. Please TEXT the practice at (607) 733-6503 on Saturday to see if anyone is available if you need to stop by for medications.

❤️We thank our clients for being amazing people who have shown us so much support. We value our relationships with all of you and are very grateful to all of you for sharing your pets with us.

July is National Pet Hydration Awareness Month!

Hydration refers to the amount of water in the body, and maintaining normal hydration for our feline friends (and for ourselves!) is essential for a variety of vital bodily functions, including temperature regulation, maintenance of normal electrolyte concentrations, digestion of food, lubrication of joints, and delivery of oxygen and other nutrients to the organs of the body.
