We’ve already seen several cases of heat related stress and injuries! Dogs/cats with parasites or heavy flea infestations are much more susceptible also— please keep them up to date on flea/tick/heartworm prevention during this extreme weather!

It's HOT!🥵Heat stress in dogs is just as serious and life-threatening as it is for humans. It is important to take steps to keep them cool outdoors during high temperatures and know the signs of heat stress.

These are the common signs of heat stress. If you notice your pet experiencing any of these symptoms, get emergency veterinary care immediately:

▪️Excessive panting
▪️Excessive drooling
▪️Abnormal gum and tongue color
▪️Anxiousness
▪️Restlessness
▪️Unsteadiness
▪️Collapse

Take these steps to keep your pets cool when temperatures rise:

🐶Provide unlimited access to fresh water and shade.

🐶Exercise your dogs in the cooler parts of the day.

🐶Stay off hot surfaces, such as asphalt, when exercising your dogs. This can cause serious burns to their paws.

🐶Never leave a pet in a vehicle, even for a short time. Temperatures in vehicles can rise to dangerous levels within minutes.

🐶Talk to your veterinarian about whether you should trim or clip your dog’s coat and whether you should use sunscreen on your pet.

🐶Keep them free of parasites, including fleas, ticks, and heartworms. Discuss the appropriate products and dosages for your pets with your veterinarian.

We are monitoring the canine respiratory disease outbreak carefully. So far, we have not seen any cases that we know of. We are asking if your dog has symptoms of ‘kennel cough’ - coughing, fever, lethargy, etc- that you let us know and please do not bring your dog inside the clinic.

This is a developing situation and the culprit of this disease has yet to be diagnosed. It appears to be a more serious viral respiratory pathogen that for most dogs just ends in a mild cough and short illness. However in a select few, it has been progressing to pneumonia and even death in some isolated cases.

This is being spread from dog to dog by close contact. Please us discretion letting your dogs commingle at dog parks, boarding and grooming salons. It is recommended that you limit these activities as much as possible.

Also, keeping your dog up to date on a bordetella vaccine (every 6 months) and a canine influenza vaccine (yearly) in addition to their DA2P and Rabies is highly recommended for at risk dogs (ones that routinely board, groom or show). While this won’t protect them against this current outbreak, it will protect them against these well known diseases that can imitate and/or make the new virus worse.

As always, we’ll do our best to stay on top of this and keep you informed so we can keep your precious pets safe and healthy!

ASK us about Librela!! Its a new monoclonal antibody injection for canine osteoarthritis. It can greatly reduce the amount of NSAIDs our painful patients are having to take, which reduces the risk of GI or renal side effects! It is also given in our office as an injection, which also can potentially eliminate the fight to take medications by mouth at home! If you have more questions I have linked the website here with the info and a short video on the pathophysiology behind the drug!

There is also a cat version known as Solensia, and we are currently offering that as well for cats that have chronic arthritis pain.

These two drugs will be game changers for our pets with chronic pain.

Our precious "Paw Paw" Swanee went to his heavenly home last Friday. He will forever be missed here in our family and at the clinic. His laugh, his infectious personality and his ability to always make you smile no matter what the day looked like will always be how we remember him. The best part is, we know without a doubt we will see him again soon and that he is reunited with his beautiful bride in Heaven.

Swanee's celebration will be Friday, November 17th 2023 at 2 with the visitation starting at 12 in Snead.

We will close at 12 on Friday November 17 in order to attend services and honour our friend and much loved Paw Paw Swanee. .

Please help us out and keep in mind it’s herd work season! There will be some days I am not in the office. It’s not because I am at home with my feet propped up😉. We are trying our best to schedule it around normal business hours (which means I may not be available for emergencies after hours) but some of it can’t be helped. To avoid any delays in getting your animals seen please call and make an appointment👍🏻.

Just so everyone is aware, the state is dropping rabies blocks to vaccinate wildlife over wooded areas. These blocks are not supposed to be toxic or harmful in anyway but be aware they are out there and if possible please keep your dogs away from them.

Rabies is real and this is an effort to keep the cases down in wild mammals that come in contact with you and our pets.

As always, the best defense is a good offense so keep your pets (even ‘indoor only’) pets vaccinated for rabies yearly to protect them AND you. It’s 14$ and it’s also the law here in our state.

Dr. Christi will be out of the office 10/5 and 10/6 for continuing education. The office will be OPEN 10/6 for sales and medication refills! She will be unavailable for emergencies 10/5-10/8. Please use the local emergency clinics for any issue that can't wait until she returns. Thank you for your understanding!

09/02/2023

We will be CLOSED Monday September 4th in observance of Labor Day!

If you have an emergency call or text 256-452-7319!

08/27/2023

As a reminder, we do offer after hours emergency care. This service is available until 9 pm. You can call or text the emergency phone at 256-452-7319. After 9 pm, any small animal emergencies that cannot wait until the following morning would need to call Trussville or Hunstville’s 24 hour emergency care facilities. Because I am only one person there are times I will be unavailable, but I do my best to see all the emergencies I can.

Please also remember we have over 5500 clients on the books and there is just one of me. If it can wait until office hours please try to do so. I understand sometimes it’s more convenient to message me or ask questions after hours, but each one of those takes me away from my family, even if it’s just a quick text or simple message. I also understand there are times when it cannot wait and I will be happy to respond with those accordingly!

Also, effective immediately there will be a different after hours fee for clients vs non clients. If you have been seen in our office the fee will be discounted as a reward for your loyalty! 🥰

08/23/2023

We will be CLOSED August 24th and 25th. We will reopen Monday August 28th for regular business hours. Dr. Christi will be unavailable for emergencies from the 24th through the 28th. We apologize for any inconvenience!
