Bittersweet day at the shelter. Three seniors went to a home together. One had come in needing emergency vet care and extensive surgery. He was touch and go for about a week. Today he and his sister, and another senior girl, went to a home together where they know time will be limited with these ferrets, but where they want them to have a loving home for the time they have.

Update 7/18/21 more names gone from the waitlist for pairs. Two people never called back in the 48 hours they had. The next person I tried had only been on the list a couple of months, but the number was not in service. So three names off the list and an appt set up with the fourth person on the list.
Trying to keep everyone up to date on the waiting list. Yes, we still have one. We have been keeping it since 2020 and when we get adoptable ferrets the top name on the list is called. They have 48 hours to call back or they are crossed off and we move on. Many times people either have already found ferrets (usually on CL) or have changed their minds. We ARE starting to see more surrenders, however, many are either seniors, get daily meds, or are aggressive biters. Please know we are placing suitable ferrets as quickly as we can get them vetted/cleared for adoption. We have not thrown our list away, it has just been a very, very strange 2020 and 2021. Thank you for your patience.

Opossums never actually play possum! The opossumā€™s famous defensive method is known scientifically as thanatopsis or tonic immobility. It isnā€™t a voluntary act, but a completely uncontrollable response to extreme fear. During an an episode of thanatopsis, an opossum is not able to ā€œsnap out ofā€ this state no matter how much it might want to. It can take an hour or more, in some situations, for this reflex to wear off. If you find an opossum that appears dead but may still be aliveā€” such as one brought to you by a petā€” donā€™t rush to dispose of it! If you see signs of life, contact a rehabilitator promptly.

FOUND CAT in Stephensville (Hwy 76 and Pew St). White with patches of gray tabby markings. Female. Has claws. Very vocal and friendly. Unfortunately I can't bring her in but she comes around daily, usually around dusk. Tried to post in lost pets of Greenville but have to have my join request approved. Sorry I don't have a camera so can't post a picture of the actual cat, but she looks similar to this "stock" photo. If you think it might be yours please call Fox Valley Ferret at 920-574-2277. Thank you.

Simon, The Trained Ferret, is so cute we can't stand it! He could get away with anything, couldn't he?

Meet BFF Gojo and her 5 kits!

BFF females have between 3-5 kits in a litter.
We have had 1 kit litters and once a 10 kit litter.
FCC staff have a surprise when they open the nest chamber 4 days after birth and count how many kits are in the litter.

Best job on the planet!

When an animal is hurt, sick, or scared, most of us have an impulse to soothe and comfort them. Itā€™s only natural! But, while kind words and gentle cooing voices may be comforting to pets and children, they have the opposite effect on wildlife. To a wild animal, a human voice doesnā€™t sound nurturing or calming, but like the alien call of a large predator.

Think of it this way: that sweet voice you think of as comforting? Thatā€™s the sound we, as scary predators, make when feeding our children. Wild animals donā€™t recognize it as calming any more than we recognize a hyenaā€™s calls to her young as calming.

If you need to capture and transport an orphaned, injured, or sick wild animal to a rehabilitator, be as quiet as possible. Donā€™t speak directly to the animal at all and keep all conversations in the car to a minimum. And remember that your radio sounds terrifying, too! Save the loud music for when you donā€™t have a frightened passenger.

We are still looking for volunteers able/willing to commit to twice a month to help with cleaning ferret rooms. We are also looking for someone willing to mow the lawn (we have a mower if you don't) for a reasonable price. Please call the shelter and leave a message if you are interested. 920-574-2277 (landline).

Please be aware that if you are not vaccinated, we will need you to wear a mask. As much as help is appreciated, we cannot risk the ferrets catching covid, and the CAN.
